Cardinal Gibbons WR Trevon Lee commits to Duke

WR Trevon Lee will visit Duke this week
WR Trevon Lee is Duke's fourth 4-star commitment in 2014

Cardinal Gibbons star WR Trevon Lee committed to Duke over Vanderbilt on Monday evening. His decision was announced live on South Florida High School Sports and WQAM 560 in the Miami area. The 5'11" 175 pound playmaker has elite speed (sub-4.5 second 40-yard time), and will be expected to compete for immediate playing time in Durham this fall. He was ranked as a 4-star prospect by ESPN, and a member of the prestigious ESPN300.

As a senior, the speedy wideout finished with 53 catches for over 700 yards and 7 touchdowns. Scouts have praised him for his strong hands, route-running, and overall play-making ability. Lee received well over 20 scholarship offers, including programs such as South Carolina, USC, Oregon and Stanford, but the Blue Devils were felt to be in a strong position throughout his recruitment. An official visit to Durham this past weekend helped to seal the deal.

When it comes to wide receivers, South Florida has been good to the Blue Devils under Coach Cutcliffe. Miami-area natives Donovan Varner and Conner Vernon thrived in recent years in the Duke offense, with Vernon becoming the ACC's all-time leading receiver in 2012. The recruiting class of 2013 brought in a trio of highly-touted Florida receivers in T.J. Douglas, Terrence Alls, and Johnell Barnes. Lee joins another South Florida receiver, Chris Taylor, in the class of 2014, which may just be Cutcliffe's best since he arrived in Durham. He becomes the 18th and final commitment in this year's class, and the 4th 4-star recruit, joining fellow Miami QB Nico Pierre, Mobile S Zavier Carmichael, and Charlotte RB Shaun Wilson.

The Blue Devils will host a Signing Day reception at the Washington Duke Inn on Wednesday at 5:30PM. Tickets are available at GoDuke.com/tickets.

Coming off an ACC Coastal Division Championship and the program's first 10-win season, Duke opens spring practice this Friday, with the annual spring game scheduled for Saturday, March 1st.

Monday Musings – Less than ten regular seson games remain, signing day

Time flies

It's hard to imagine that there are just five games left in Cameron Indoor Stadium for Duke Basketball this season. You can actually see the Wake game with standing room only tickets through the ticket office, so my suggestion is to grab them up and support a team that is starting to find itself. Duke is down to just nine regular season games on its schedule.

Rankings

It was hard to believe that Duke was just ranked 17th last week and some think they could remain around that spot today in that they suffered another loss. But my take is that they move up in the polls later today as some start to realize how overrated teams I will not mention are. While the ACC is down, especially at the bottom of the league, the top is pretty tough. Yet folks seem in love with the Big 12 per their votes which I for one do not completely get. Anyhow, Duke has played a heck of a schedule to date and the losses as painful as they are to a spoiled fan base will only help when it truly becomes time to be one and done.

Duke Football Signing Day

Duke Football will welcome its new class of players to the fold on Wednesday and Blue Devil Nation will be there to get Cut's comments. If you think for one second that the fan base is not still buzzing over an amazing season, you would be wrong. Momentum is finally on the side of the program and there is more interest in recruiting this year than at any time in several decades. Duke is still trying to close on a player, surprise or two, so we look forward to seeing it all play out.

You don't have to be in the South to be a redneck

Maybe it's because there are a lot of them, see the Carrier Dome packed to the brim. I mean, all fan bases have them whether they care to admit it or not. I'm talking rednecks here and they are definitely not just in the south. It wasn't long after a classic game ended that a few Syracuse fans decided to send me some one liners on twitter where there was no dignity in their win. The usual "yall suck," stuff came to my attention amongst others and that ignorant bliss and typing while drinking are here to stay. Even in Syracuse. To me a redneck is just another slang  name for ignorance. You can be truly southern in every way and not be ignorant. That said, ignorance is bliss for some no matter where you live. Thankfully, there are a rational few out there as well and they realize a great rivalry has been born and know how to enjoy it without belittling a team that made the very game you just watched classic.

K was not about to blame the ref

He never has and never will and I applaud him for that. I tweeted it was a shame that a classic game had a blatantly missed call. I am talking of course of the Rodney Hood drive where he was clearly hit on the arm. Michael Robert's swallowed his whistle on that play despite being right in front of it. The thing here is that nobody wanted any tainting to a classic game that helped the ACC brand, but it is a shame that a clear call was missed. We'll never know if that could have altered the outcome, but it is a shame that it was missed in an otherwise fairly called contest. Hopefully, the ACC will at least show him that missed call was huge in a high impact game. Still, it was not the cause of the loss, so we'll move forward now.

Wake travels to Cameron to face Duke

There is an overwhelming sense of stagnation for the Duke fan base after experiencing a close overtime loss to Syracuse. The reason being that the game was such a classic, that it's hard to move on as the residue lingers for many.

But move on, Duke will and their next opponent will be Wake Forest in cozy Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Face it, the Duke versus the 'Cuse game was amazing but thankfully for the Blue Devils there is plenty of basketball left in the season.

When Duke takes the floor against the Deacons you can expect the Crazies to be on their game and starting to prep for a return match up with Syracuse.

There are just five games left in Cameron this season, so each will be of the utmost importance as the Blue Devils scramble for a good seed come tournament time.

To do that, Krzyzewski will not allow his team to overlook the Deacons, who holds wins over the likes of North Carolina and Notre Dame while sporting a 14-8 record.

This is a better Wake Forest team than a year ago and the best its embattled coach, Jeff Bzdelik's tenure. But they've won just two out of their last three games.

In years past, Wake has been led by Travis McKie, but in his senior season, he's but the third leading scorer.

Stepping up for the Deacs has been most noticeable from Cody Miller-McIntyre and Devin Thomas giving Wake three double figure scores this season.

This game will have more to do with the play of Duke than Wake though. And what I mean, is can the Blue Devils quickly put a classic game behind them.

My guess is that they will and we will almost certainly see a lower scoring game and that seemingly is to the Deacons liking in that they've scored 80 points or more in five games against lesser opponents on the season.

The Blue Devils could be a bit hung over, but they've been playing good basketball since their win over Virginia and my guess is that they'll want to prove the loss to the Orange was a blip on the radar.

I think Duke will attack Wake from start to finish and use their depth which has been huge of late.

Look for Duke to continue to establish players roles as well as we near tournament time.

Moving forward, Duke will be a tough draw and while the team has fallen short against the likes of Syracuse, Kansas and Arizona, they are learning what it takes to win those games.

The game will tip at the dreaded 9:00 time slot but the positive there, is that the Blue Devils could likely use all the rest they can get.

If Duke is not caught looking ahead, I see them cruising to a victory. The key will simply be to bring the emotion and desire to the table they've played with of late.

• Saturday’s contest marks the second straight game in which Duke has played in a venue for the first time. Monday’s meeting with Pittsburgh was Duke’s first trip to the Petersen Events Center, while Saturday’s contest against Syracuse is Duke’s first in the Carrier Dome. • Parker is only the fifth freshman in Duke history and the first under Coach K to post double-doubles in three straight games. The last to do so was Gene Banks, who had five straight from March 4 to March 25 during the 1977-78 season.

• Parker is averaging 20.5 points per game in four games against top-25 opponents. He has topped the 20-point plateau twice in those games – 27 versus Kansas and 21 versus Pittsburgh – and has hit at least seven field goals in all four outings. He has added 7.3 rebounds, 1.0 blocks and 1.0 steals per game.

• Duke is 10-0 this season and 39-2 in his career when Andre Dawkins scores in double figures. Dawkins has scored 10+ points in three of the past four games.

• In four games against ranked opponents, Dawkins has hit 9-of-10 (.900) three-point field goals and 11-of-13 (.846) field goals overall. He hit 6-of-7 (.857) three-point shots against No. 18 Pittsburgh Monday to tie the school record for highest three-point percentage in a game.
