Remembering My Pal, Al Featherston

Al Featherston passed on today, Monday, 11-5-2018.

My longtime friend, Al Featherston died Monday, Nov. 5th, 2018 at Duke Hospital after a long illness.  Many of you know that Al has been a sportswriter for more than five decades and has authored books on both history and ACC sports.

Al attended Duke University and contributed to the ACC Sports Journal, Basketball Times, Blue Ribbon Yearbooks, Duke Basketball Report, GoDuke.com and many other outlets over the years.  He spent a great portion of his career writing for the Durham Morning Herald and the Durham Herald Sun as well.

He battled his illness until the end, but never recovered well from elective heart surgery.  He was also diagnosed with ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease.  Being a long time New York Yankees fanatic, Al was able to go out like one of his favorites.

I had a lot of history with Al, which included seeing Duke win a National Championship together.  Having seen a lot of Duke athletics in my time, he enjoyed someone to talk history with,

Towards the end, another good friend of Al's named Ed McIntyre was able to help get our pal into a retirement home.  I would take Al to appointments and run errands while going over on Saturdays to watch college football games.

Make no mistake, Al loved his sports and we watched the Duke away football games together right up until his passing.  Al was staying on a strict diet and got down to 212 pounds, but he liked that I would bring something special for him for football Saturday,

We thought we'd lost Al about two weeks ago,  On a Monday, following the win over Georgia Tech, Al went back into the hospital never to come out,  He would also lose conscience for about five days.

Thankfully, Al came out of that and just in time to inform his sister Libby who was up from Southport on his final wishes.  He was able to get some closure and I can tell you after conversing with him that he was still very sharp minded and at peace with what was to come.

So, as soon as I get to his room, Al spots the box score to the Duke Basketball exhibition game in my hand.  Before he can say hello, he is reaching for it while asking me about Marques Bolden.

Yep, his faculties were intact and he wasted little time in wanting to talk about that game and the Duke loss to Pitt in football which he had just watched.

I spent the better part of three hours with Al the last time I saw him.  I filled him in on what he missed while being out and he sponged it all in while wanting to continue to talk about this years basketball team.

Al was very excited about tomorrows Duke matchup with Kentucky and the Duke-UNC football game coming up this weekend.  He mentioned that he was sad that he would miss this basketball season with this year's talented team, but we had all hoped he could bounce out of his issues and at least make it through this week.

I was saddened to hear the news of his moving on from his sister this morning whom I have been able to get to know through the process.  I contracted a virus and could not make it back to see Al beyond that last conversation.

But in the end, I realized I had a great conversation with him that day and it was a normal exchange which I think he liked.  I will miss my friend greatly and talking Duke Athletics, ACC sports in general and appreciate the many memories with him by my side.

Al wanted his sportswriter friends and acquaintances to know he was thinking about them.  He was in his favorite spot in the world on press row where he enjoyed socializing.  Towards the end, the plan was for him to dictate some messages to me but time would not allow for that.  But, again, he was thinking of many of you.

Whether you are a sportswriter, work at Duke Athletics or in the ACC offices in Greensboro, just know Al was appreciative of the relationships.

Al was the son of Louis Alywn Featherston Sr. and Mary Norfleet Vick Featherston.  He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth "Libby" Featherston if Southport, N.C.; and brothers, Mark Featherston of Caddilac, MI and Richard Featherston of Seymour, Conn.

The family plans a private cremation.  A celebration of Al's life will be announced at a future time. I will let you know of any further details and please pass this information on.

I appreciate your friendship Al, who last told me he was looking forward to seeing what happens next.

DeLauruer, White Named Duke Captains

Javin DeLaurier

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced Friday that junior forwards Javin DeLaurier and Jack White will be the team’s captains for the 2018-19 season.

The pair are two of Duke’s top returning players from the squad that went 29-8 last season and reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

“I couldn’t pick two more worthy individuals to lead our team than Javin and Jack,” said Krzyzewski. “They have done everything we’ve asked, from the end of last year to now, to be ready to lead this team. Jack and Javin have earned the respect of our players and staff, and I’m proud to have them as captains.”

Being selected a Duke captain by Coach K is one of the most important responsibilities bestowed upon a Blue Devil. Each member of Duke’s current staff – Nate James, Jon Scheyer, Chris Carrawell and Nolan Smith – served as a captain while playing for Coach K.

“I’m honored to be selected a captain,” said White, a native of Traralgon, Victoria, Australia. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity, and the chance to be a captain alongside my teammate and best friend, is tremendously special.”

“It’s a tremendous honor and I’m very excited for the chance to lead this team,” said DeLaurier, a Shipman, Va., native. “We have a great group that’s capable of achieving all of our goals as long as we stick to the plan. I'm so grateful and humbled to be chosen a captain by Coach K."

No. 4-ranked Duke opens the regular season November 6 versus Kentucky in the State Farm Champions Classic.

Duke Picked to Win ACC, R.J. Barrett ROY

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke is the 2018-19 Atlantic Coast Conference preseason favorite, according to the media poll conducted as part of the league’s annual Operation Basketball held Wednesday at Charlotte’s Spectrum Center.

The Blue Devils, who finished 29-8 last season, earned the program’s 23rd consecutive NCAA Tournament berth and advanced to the Elite Eight for the 21st time in program history, received 52 of 121 first-place votes and totaled 1,709 points in the preseason poll released Thursday.
Duke will enter the upcoming season a very different team from last year’s model. The Blue Devils are expected to rely heavily on a talented incoming class freshman class that includes athletic forward RJ Barrett – the media’s choice as ACC Preseason Rookie of the Year – Zion Williamson, Cam Reddish, Tre Jones and Joey Baker. Barrett, Williamson, Reddish and Jones are all ranked among the nation’s top 15 incoming players.
North Carolina senior Luke Maye was voted the ACC Preseason Player of the Year and heads up the Preseason All-ACC team.
Defending ACC champion Virginia placed a close second to Duke in the predicted order of finish. The Cavaliers received 47 first-place votes and 1,699 total points. Virginia was followed by North Carolina (20 first-place votes), Syracuse and Virginia Tech.
ACC preseason voters selected Clemson sixth, followed by Florida State, NC State and Notre Dame. Miami was picked 10th, while Louisville, Boston College, Georgia Tech Wake Forest and Pitt rounded out the balloting. Syracuse and Clemson each received one first-place vote.
Maye, who hails from Huntersville, North Carolina, was also named the ACC Preseason Player of the Year by Sports Illustrated earlier this month. The 6-8, 240-pound forward is coming off a junior season in which he finished second in the ACC rebounding (10.1) and seventh in scoring (16.9). He was voted third-team All-American by the Associated Press, the Sporting News, USA Today and NBC Sports
Named first team All-ACC and the league’s Most Improved Player in 2017-18, Maye enters senior year with 857 career points and 565 rebounds. He has scored in double figures 36 times and has 18 career double-doubles.
Duke’s 6-foot-7 Barrett is a five-star recruit from Mississauga, Ontario, who was ranked the No. 1 overall prospect in the class of 2019 by ESPN, Rivals.com, Scout.com and 24/7 Sports. In addition to a decorated prep basketball career, he averaged 21.6 points, 8.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game for Canada’s gold medal team at last summer’s FIBA U19 Men’s Basketball World Cup.
Maye and Barrett are joined on the Preseason All-ACC first team by Syracuse’s Tyus Battle, Virginia’s Kyle Guy and Boston College’s Ky Bowman.
The Preseason All-ACC second team consists of Duke’s Williamson, Virginia’s DeAndre Hunter and Ty Jerome, Virginia Tech’s Justin Robinson and Clemson’s Marcquise Reed.
Maye paced the Preseason Player of the Year voting with 50 votes. Duke’s Barrett placed second with 22 votes, and Williamson received 15. Syracuse’s Battle was next with 11.
The top-three vote-getters in the ACC Preseason Freshman of the Year balloting are all Blue Devils. Barrett led with 66 votes, while Williamson picked up 43 and Reddish placed a distance third with four.
Duke was picked as the ACC preseason favorite for the 19th time in the 50-year history of the poll and the 18th time under veteran head coach Mike Krzyzewski. The Blue Devils were also tabbed as the favorite last each of the two previous preseasons.
ACC teams open regular-season play on Tuesday, November 6. Ten games are set for opening night involving league teams, including Duke versus Kentucky in the State Farm Champions Classic in Indianapolis. A traditional in-state rivalry game is also set for November 6, as Florida State welcomes Florida to Tallahassee.
The first conference game of the 2018-19 season is set for New Year’s Day, when Notre Dame visits Virginia Tech at 1 p.m.
Charlotte’s Spectrum Center will play host to the 2019 New York Life ACC Tournament for the second time and the first time since 2008. This will mark the 13th time the city of Charlotte has hosted the country’s premiere postseason conference tournament. The tournament opens with three first-round games on Tuesday, March 12, and culminates with the Saturday night championship game on March 16.

Duke Rolls In Exhibition Opener

Duke came out firing and riding the play of RJ Barrett who score 19 points in the first half to give the Blue Devils 52-36 lead at the break. Barrett would end the game with 23 points 4 assists and 3 steals and Duke would go on to a 106-64 victory.

Zion Williamson led all scorers with 29 points including several of his crowd-rousing dunks.  He also added 4 assists and 6 rebounds to his totals.

Duke got terrific play from Tre Jones as well who quarterbacked the team, dishing out 9 assists.  Jones, teammate and close friend, Cam Reddish also had 9 assists to go with 13 points and 5 rebounds.  Reddish has been playing with gimpy ribs and his toughness earned the praise of his coach Mike Krzyzewski after the game.

The Blue Devils also moved further along in developing their bench where Alex O'Connell, Jack White added 21 points between them.  Marques Bolden started and had 6 points and 6 rebounds.

Duke scored 30 points off turnovers where they played almost exclusively man to man defense.  The Blue Devils came up with 10 steals as well and 6 blocked shots against a less talented, but game, Panthers team.

The Blue Devils scored 52 points in the paint holding their opponent to 28.  Duke also forced 23 turnovers in the game with their length,

I will break down the game with a more through analogy on Wednesday.  Mike Krzyzewski will head up to media day in Charlotte tomorrow morning., while Jack White and Javin DeLaurier are on their way this late evening.
