The High School Hoops articles will be a weekly feature at Blue Devil Nation as they were the past two years; Edition No. 4 is being posted just four days after Edition No. 3 due to a significant volume of activity taking place on the hardwood these past few nights. Blue Devil Nation encourages everyone to check back late Sunday evening for High School Hoops 2010 Edition No. 5. [private]
Austin Rivers earned MVP honors at the Rotary Tip-Off Classic as Winter Park HS won the championship. Rivers scored 20 points, in the championship game, as Winter Park defeated Winter Springs 59 – 32. In the semi-finals, Winter Park defeated Oak Ridge 71 – 57. The Orlando Sentinel has a video recap posted. Rivers scored 28 points and drained seven 3-point shots in a 70 – 43 opening round victory over Lake Brantley.
In his next game, on Tuesday (Dec 8), Rivers scored 21 points in a 75 – 34 victory over Colonial.
Josh Hairston played his debut game at Montrose Christian in the Caron Butler Invitational in Washington D.C. Hairston scored 26 points as Montrose defeated Theodore Roosevelt HS 63 – 47. Theodore Roosevelt was 2 – 0 coming into the game. Montrose Christian and Hairston’s next game is on Friday night.
Tyler Thornton drew an offensive foul with 28 seconds remaining to seal Gonzaga's 64 - 59 victory over Carroll High. Thornton scored 16 points, including going 6-6 from the charity stripe, and delivered four assists in the game. He is shooting 90.9 percent from the free throw line through three games. Gonzaga and Thornton will be back in action on Thursday evening.
J.P. Tokoto scored 19 points as Menomonee Falls defeated Milwaukee Marquette 56 – 36. Menomonee Falls and Tokoto will be back in action on Friday night.
Trey Zeigler was the leader in scoring and rebounding with 30 and 13 as Mt Pleasant defeated Midland 69 – 46. He also dished out seven assists. In this article, from The Morning Sun, Mt Pleasant Coach Sam Taylor states, “Trey was solid. But it won’t be his best game of the season I can tell you that.” Duke University representatives attended the game to scout Zeigler (I heard through the grapevine it was Nate James, but I cannot confirm who was in attendance). Here is another recap of the action.
Marshall Plumlee grabbed nine rebounds to go along with four points as Christ School opened conference play with an 80 – 67 win over Rabun Gap. Plumlee is averaging 7.6 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game through the first nine games of his junior season.
In case any of our faithful readers have not already seen this article with two embedded videos, here is a Kyrie Irving preview from MassLive.com. [/private]
When I first started to write of the aftermath of Barnes recruitment, I realized that in order to get a better picture that it would take a little time. So, I let this sit on the cutting room floor for a few days. Of course, members wanted answers right away and nobody could give them what few involved in the situation wanted to talk about.
As time has gone on and I have yet to release what we'll term BDN's final word on Barnes, I realized that despite all of my efforts there was no real way to make sense of the disappointment. Still, I will give it a try in an effort to appease those with questions.
First off all, lets be real in that had Harrison Barnes chose Duke, we would have had no problem with his recruitment. Many of you are seeking answers but nobody can give you a complete scenario as to how things went down.
I have been saying for a year now that [private] I do not like it when Duke is considered the leader for a recruit, especially early on. Duke has missed on Barnes, Boynton and Monroe after being considered the leader and there are others as well.
I personally do not think prospects like being linked to a certain school for a long period of time, for all the questions and all the attacks surely come. Yes, we are talking negative recruiting and there is a lot of that going on. But that's a story for another day for it was far from the sole reason Duke lost Barnes to Carolina.
I say lost Barnes, for I really thought they had established themselves the leader and there was never any over the top bad vibes from Barnes throughout the process. You can also make a case in that Roy Williams closed hard and seemingly made all the right moves.
Roy camped out in Iowa towards the end and he had his team working behind the scenes at breakneck speed in a calculated effort to get Barnes. The official visit to UNC was a grand slam, but why?
Well, as it turns out Barnes mom, Shirley is a big UNC fan and she was completely blown away on the visit, meeting Michael Jordan and being schmoozed by players she grew up rooting for is tough to overcome Nobody realized just how deep this went until it was too late to do anything about it.
Barnes is a mommas boy, so he would naturally be swayed by his mom and sister's emotion. It is also known that the Barnes family felt more at home at UNC than they did Duke for whatever reason.
Yes, Barnes was urged to call certain ex Duke players and yes, kids on their team that were recruited by Duke [Leslie McDonald] and those who wanted to be for exposure [Kendall Marshall] played roles.
It's many kids dreams to take it down to the wire with the biggest names clamoring for them as they announce to a national audience. Duke was not about to fall prey to Marshall whose Dad wanted DU to offer for they knew where he would end up all along.
Still, there is no secret that prospects seemingly have no problem with slipping a nod and wink to one coach while stringing along others, recruiting budgets and emotions be damned.
Barnes did string Duke along and he made them feel as if there was a legitimate shot right up until his announcement. For Duke fans, it did seem like a slap in the face with Roy slipping in after Duke's in home and no sign of serious remorse for the jilted ones.
Once again, we all had to sit on pins and needles while Barnes gave what seemed like an acceptance speech at the Academy Awards before going over and pulling up Skype on his computer in a most clunky way.
When Roy's face popped up, the mystery was officially over but rest assured it had been over and this "different way of announcing," had been set up well before the day of the event.
But Duke has been here before. Patrick Patterson strung Duke along yet in the end it was clear Duke was not in the top two. Patterson's mom jumped to the mike and shouted, "We shocked the world, we shocked the world."
I suppose that is okay from the prospect's standpoint, but wasting the recruiting budgets of schools for your own needs is wrong in my book.
Yes, Mrs. Patterson and Patrick shocked the world, but why be so proud of that? Both the Barnes and the Patterson's had a need for the element of surprise, but whether or not they went too far is a matter of opinion.
I'm more than happy for them in that it was a big moment for their sons, but when will the madness end where prospects clamor for the ultimate spotlight?
Like the vast majority of prospects, Barnes changed by his senior season, just like Boynton and Monroe.
Barnes had nothing but good things to say about Krzyzewski up until about three months ago when his Mom took complete control of the media and decided Barnes would speak to who they felt were the best sound pieces for their goals.
The same kid that would come up to me after his AAU games to ask about his stats to send to his mom, dissed me in the end. Never mind, how good I made him look and that he once treated me as if I was a step above the rest of the media.
No sour grapes there, for I never bugged Barnes at home but one time. The last time I called, I was told he would return my call by his mom Shirley and that it would be that night, but the call never came.
Look, Barnes is a good kid as is his family, but they didn't do Duke any favors and something tells me there is already some of that UNC blue crawling up their spines that will in time bring out the intensity of the rivalry.
The thing is that Duke recruited Barnes hard and did just about everything they could which makes this a tough pill to swallow. But Roy worked some magic in the end and that's the bottom line.
I am not sure if Duke let up a bit in the end or anything else for that matter. Duke is not about to share details with anyone, especially those who will run with it on the Internet.
It should also be noted that the Duke staff just wants to move on and Barnes is now history in their book. But you can bet that the Duke family is distraught and there is a definite sense of betrayal.
My understanding is that Barnes decision caught many Duke players off guard, but there did seem to be a sense of trouble about a week ahead of his decision.
Incoming Duke freshman Kyrie Irving even made a veiled statement via twitter that in hindsight showed the writing on the wall.
Duke has clammed up of late and it should make sense to us all for there is a basketball game tonight as the season is underway. Duke and their fans can get over this and it will likely make the return to the top sweeter.
Still, I get it in that this was the most devastating loss yet for Barnes to the neighbors down the road.
A reality check is in order, for you will hear about Barnes a lot this season on telecasts and you will have him rammed down your throat in the off season and even more-so when he sets foot in the Dean Dome. It will not be fun but it is best to prepare for it, deal with it and accept what we can't control.
This is also a test of Duke fans mettle for many of you started pulling for Duke when they were on top of the world. Some of us went through two 10-16 seasons, a coach bringing us back to the final four and then leaving and watching Krzyzewski build Duke into what it is today.
A visit in history shows that Krzyzewski won with lesser talent via rankings in his first several years. And it took a while before he started to get marquee recruits.
Duke fans have been through a great cycle and now we are in a somewhat down cycle only with concerns to Carolina. Take them away and Duke is just a top ten team ... how disgusting we have to live with that, huh?
Give it time and this to will flip. Barnes would have flipped the balance of power had he chosen Duke, but he instead widened the gap only in that Duke needs athletic wings.
Duke will work out and remember that maybe, just maybe, the fans need to understand what it is like to be hungry again.
It's never been Duke's birthright to get a championship every year or a prospect they desire. But when you compare Duke to the rest of the country's programs, they are still elite in every way.
As for Barnes, facts are still being sifted through and by the time I get the whole picture none of us will care. Quite simply, it is time for all of us to move on and enjoy the season in the here and now.
Final word - The Duke staff worked their butts off recruiting Barnes and they gave it their best effort. That's all they could do.[/private]
Tyler Thornton signed his letter of intent to attend Duke University. Thornton joins Josh Hairston and Kyrie Irving in the class of 2010 and the trio could be joined by Harrison Barnes in just a few hours. Stay tuned to Blue Devil Nation as we'll take a further look at the future Blue Devils in the coming week.
Thornton [6-2,180] enters his senior year at Gonzaga in Washington, D.C. where he hopes to help lead his team to the title.
Duke got it's point guard of the future when Kyrie Irving decided to make the Blue Devils his collegiate choice on ESPNU just minutes ago.
"Im pleased to announce I will be attending Duke University," said Irving.
When asked what the main factor in his decision was. Irving said, "Just my relationship with Coach K and the whole staff. It was a great mix of academics and athletics. On my offcial visit, it just felt like home."
Irving will join 6-8 forward Josh Hairston and 6-2 point guard Tyler Thornton as true freshman in the class of 2010.
Irving, one of the nations top point guard prospects. picked the Blue Devils over Indiana, Kentucky and Texas A & M.
The New Jersey native is a vital cog in the Blue Devils future plans and he'll be given the wheel to the ship from day one.
Irving visited the Duke campus with his Dad and Uncle and played pick up with the current players while on his official visit and that successful weekend pretty much sealed the deal. Duke students cheered his name during a football game against N.C. Central where he hung out with rising senior Lance Thomas.
Irving plays his high school basketball for powerful St. Patrick's and he dressed for the New Jersey Celtics and the New Jersey Roadrunners on the AAU circuit. In Orlando, he led his team to back to back victories over the circuits two best teams, scoring 65 points in the process.
The rising high school senior had some of his best games of the summer circuit during the AAU Nationals where Coach K and his staff watched his every move. For more on his summer exploits, just check out the BDN archives.
It's worth noting that two other jersey point guards in Bobby Hurley and Jason Williams led Duke to all three of Duke's National titles under Kyzyzewski.
Coach K bonded well with Irving during the process and the Devils made it clear that he was their point guard of choice. Duke Assistant Coach Chris Collins was the lead assistant with Irving.
With Irving in the fold, Duke will now turn their attention to Harrison Barnes and other prospects. More on this on the Blue Devil Nation Premium message board. And more on Kyrie Irving as next week progresses.
Irving's commitment starts off a huge sports weekend at Duke where they will entertain Harrison Barnes and play Pfeiffer at 6:30 on Saturday. Duke also plays a huge football game at 1:30 versus Maryland. So, if you are local, this is a great time to support the Devils in person.
Andrew Slater's Scouting Report on Kyrie Irving - Kyrie Irving is a 6'2" scoring point guard from St. Patrick's of Elizabeth, New Jersey. He has the prototypical size and demeanor to lead a college program to the highest levels. He is a classic example of a scorer with a shooter's touch.
Irving can change pace well, has an above-average and improving handle, and a good sense of spacing. Irving can get to the basket at will against most quality guards and possesses a very good crossover that he utilizes in transition and particularly against half-court pressure. He’s got a quick release with three point capability, but there are stretches when his long distance shot is flat. Irving takes few “bad” or ill-advised shots for a kid his age and his court vision is quite good. Irving is a very good mid-range shooter with a quality release and is more than capable of coming off of a screen and knocking down shots on either elbow or through the bank shot. He is also an excellent foul shooter, which would’ve been beneficial in close, late game possessions, but, for St. Patrick‘s sake, they were only in one close game after Irving joined the team.
Although a work in progress, Kyrie has become a more intense defender, who takes calculated and opportunistic gambles for steals on defense, in particular, using his good, but sometimes underrated athleticism to anticipate errant or lazy passes . Given his tendency to take the ball to the rack, he needs to add muscle to withstand the rigors of a long and physical college season, but, at the high school level, he has been able to consistently deal with the punishment that his relatively thin frame takes from attacking and finishing in the lane, as frequently as he does. Irving worked on assuming more of a leadership role for his AAU team, the Roadrunners, in preparation for his upcoming senior season with the Celtics of St. Patrick's. He is capable of finishing above the rim in transition, but, in traffic, relies on floaters, finger rolls, and is both skilled and ambidextrous around the rim. The NJ guard has a very high basketball IQ, is a considerate teammate, and is quite attentive and coachable.
One of Duke's most coveted prospects, Kyrie Irving, is set to announce his collegiate decision tomorrow on ESPNU which airs at 5:30 EST. Irving will choose between Duke, Kentucky and Texas A & M. The Blue Devils have made Irving their point guard of choice and his addition would give the Blue Devils a three man class with Josh Hairston and Tyler Thornton. For additional information, join and partake in the Blue Devil Nation Premium [subscription only] Message Boards and be in the know. We'll have more on Irving's pending decision tomorrow.
There are a lot of special surprises in the works for this Friday's Countdown to Craziness, so be sure to either attend or tune in to this event. More details are forthcoming, but they want to keep some of the entertainment and activities under wraps. The promotions for this event are listed at GoDuke.com or the Countdown for Craziness site.
In a recent talk with an assistant coach, I was told that every single player had come back better than they were before. As always Duke will adjust their team to the personnel at hand. All three freshman are expected to play key roles in their first season. Andre Dawkins will be asked to feel some big shoes which formerly belonged to Gerald Henderson. Ryan Kelly will add versatility and Mason Plumlee will almost certainly start in the post. Kyle Singler will be allowed more freedom which may mean we'll see what he can do at his natural position. We've hinted that Nolan Smith could have a breakout year and they will give him more of a leadership role as well. Jon Scheyer has them excited and there are no worries that he cannot thrive once again as a dual point with Smith. BDN will bring members the news from Wednesday's season opening press conference with Coach Krzyzewski in a live blog and will have audio up shortly after the gathering.
So far, there are four visitors slated to attend Countdown for Craziness. [private] Marshall Plumlee leads the pack of prospects and he'll be joined by Quin Cook. Duke verbals Tyler Thornton and Josh Hairston will also be there. We will tell you if any others join the frey as the week goes on, so there is no reason to ask about this on the message board.
Now, let's talk about Kyrie Irving. As some of you have already seen, any calls to Irving will only result in what you already know. The date for his official announcement is October 22nd and that will be televised by ESPNU. As we've told you, Irving will visit Kentucky's Midnight Madness, but there is little reason for worry despite anything you are apt to hear. Irving will be a Dukie so let's just be patient and wait it out.
That said I would like to address recent issues on the message boards where some posters go into a tailspin at what they hear from other sites message boards. Our policy has long been to deal in facts, not rumors. Neither myself or the BDN staff will answer all of the rumors for what we tell you is factual and informed. Please do not send me the "He said, she said," stuff for I can assure you I hear pretty much everything that goes on. Our sources are as good as they get and our network grows daily. If you hear something here, you can count on it and our track record speaks for itself. If there is anything going on, I will tell you what I can, so it isn't always necessary to ask about every little whimper. We have created a rumor forum for the purpose of containing rumors, propaganda and paranoia. I will not answer a lot of questions in that forum. I have also instructed moderators to take a firmer approach in an effort to keep this the best board out there.
Now, back to recruiting news. Many close to the situation feel that Harrison Barnes is a two team race with Duke and North Carolina. The Tar Heels have made up some ground and negative vibes have been sent out through various channels in the most heated battle between the two schools since Shane Battier. No matter what cards the Heels play, Duke can counter and the relationship between Krzyzewski and Barnes has been solid from the start. UNC is playing catch up and they have done a good job of impressing Barnes, but I cannot see them as being the leader as some suggest. Maybe there is no leader, but that could change with Barnes official visit to Durham on October 23rd. Expect Barnes to come in knowing that his friend Kyrie Irving committed the night before and expect Duke to be real and put their best foot forward during the visit.
Speaking of this site blowing up on October 22nd, let me set the scenario for you. We expect Kyrie Irving to verbal to Duke on Friday and then there is the Pfeiffer exhibition game which we'll cover. Of course, Harrison Barnes is in town and Duke plays Maryland at home in football, where we will again cover the event. The next morning I will head to Greensboro, North Carolina for ACC Operation Basketball which kicks off the season with all of the ACC coaches and players from each team. In short, articles, news and information will be all over the place. You can bet I will be taking my vitamins in the coming days. As we have said before, there are times when this site explodes so be prepared for the fireworks.
Duke is still recruiting and staying in contact with Roscoe Smith, but will only turn their attention to him after Harrison Barnes makes his decision. Of course, Barnes to Duke would like cause Duke to move on to 2011.
Duke is still working on getting Brad Beal to visit Durham, but if Irving and Rivers fall into place, they would likely have enough players at his position. They really like Beal though, as does most everyone who has seen him play.
The Blue Devils also stay in close contact with Quincy Miller [offered] who they feel is a Duke kid through and through, but with advisers in his ear, this one will almost assuredly go on for a while.
On a football note, recruits have responded very well to Dukes 49-28 win over NCSU and this one is already paying dividends in the class of 2011, especially in state. Duke is expecting to be healthy for Maryland on the aforementioned super weekend and Cutcliffe will emphasize how to enjoy a win yet still know you have to work hard to earn victories. Of course, this is new for many Blue Devils and it will be important for them to get a proper mind set for the coming ACC season.
Lastly, we'll talk of Austin Rivers. Rivers has officially opened his recruitment up for Duke and it is Duke and Florida for his services. Expect Rivers to concentrate on his coming high school season and then make his decision. You all know by now that I am calling Duke in this one and yes I feel very confident about that. I am very excited having watched Rivers adoringly on the AAU circuit in about 15 games. [/private]
