High School Hoops 2010 Edition No. 3

Josh & TylerThis edition of our running high school coverage includes updates on committed players Josh Hairston and Tyler Thornton as well as a game summary of the Findlay Prep – Christ School game, which was played at the Marshall County Hoopfest. Analysis and commentary on Duke recruiting target Marshall Plumlee rounds out the coverage. [private]

Josh Hairston and Tyler Thornton have been named to the initial All-Met Watch at the Washington Post. Hairston has transferred from Courtland High School to Montrose Christian for his senior season due to a desire to play against top tier talent. Thornton is back at Gonzaga and looking to lead the Eagles to a Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship. Last season, DeMatha defeated Gonzaga, 62 – 61, in the championship game.

Quinn Cook, a junior at DeMatha, is another familiar name on the list as is UNC commit Kendall Marshall of O’Connell High School and Maryland commit Terrence Ross who plays alongside Hairston at Montrose Christian.

The Washington Post has a detailed article posted on Hairston. Montrose Christian was scheduled to play their first game of the season on Saturday against Washington Lee High School, but the game was postponed. Montrose Christian is scheduled to be in action on Tuesday evening.

Gonzaga has blown away their first two opponents this year. Thornton scored 20 points in a 97 – 46 defeat of St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes and four points in a 90 – 32 defeat of Don Bosco Cristo Rey. The Eagles will be back in action on Monday evening against Carroll High who has started the season 2 - 0.

Christ School took on national powerhouse Findlay Prep on Friday evening at the Marshall County Hoopfest. I watched the game on the Internet via streaming video at ihigh.com. Findlay Prep led 21 – 16 at the end of the first quarter as they were able to get out in transition and score. Christ School kept the score close with accurate outside shooting.

In the second quarter, the Greenies took the lead on a pair of free throws going up 29 - 28. But Findlay Prep quickly responded and the first half ended with Findlay Prep leading 38 – 35.

Findlay Prep opened the 3rd Quarter with an 8 – 0 run before Christ School made two free throws to make the score 46 – 37. The teams continued to go at each other and the pivotal 3rd Quarter ended with Findlay Prep leading 59 – 47. Findlay Prep scored the first eight and last six points of the quarter.

Christ School fought back in the 4th Quarter via the 3-point basket, knocking down five, during the last eight minutes of the game, but in the end Findlay Prep was too much for the Greenies. The final score was 80 – 64.

Marshall Plumlee was largely ineffective in the low post as Findlay Prep fronted him and denied the entry pass throughout the contest. Plumlee scored two points and grabbed seven rebounds. Findlay Prep features Tristan Thompson (6’9” 215) who is the number four ranked player in the Class of 2010 and Godwin Okonji (6’8” 225) who is averaging 10 points and 10 rebounds per game. Like his brothers, Marshall runs the court well and is active on the boards. However, he missed two tip-in opportunities on the offensive glass. Just a junior, Marshall Plumlee needs a lot of work in the weight room over the next two years.

I do not want to make too much out of his performance in this game as it was the first time I have ever watched Marshall Plumlee play and he was up against physically gifted low post players in Thompson and Okonji. His 7’0” frame will fill out through natural growth and a workout regimen, while his ability to get up and down the court is already a solid asset.

On Saturday afternoon, Christ School faced off against Grace Prep Academy. The Greenies won easily 80 – 62.  Plumlee scored nine points and had six rebounds.

On December 2nd, the Greenies dominated Asheville High School 104 – 48. Marshall Plumlee scored 10 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked eight shots in the game. [/private]

BDN Premium Team and Recruiting Update

Mason Plumlee was officially cleared to play late yesterday afternoon.  Plumlee has been practicing and went full throttle yesterday.  His wrist is still a concern but the consensus is that he is ready to go.  How much time he logs against Wisconsin remains to be seen, but looking at match-ups and front court depth, there is good reason to think we'll see the freshman on the court.

Duke has prepared for [private] a tough game against Wisconsin, knowing it will be a physical man's game.  Lance Thomas stated that Duke would not back down from anyone in a confident manner during a media gathering yesterday.  Thomas hopes to build on his performance against UConn and said that he always played like that in practice and that it was now translating to the court.

As you know by now, Brad Beal gave Florida his verbal and many feel Duke backed off.  Well, they may have in the end after it became apparent that Beal would choose the long time favorite Gators.  One must remember that Beal was ready to commit to Florida before Duke started recruiting him.  The Devils made efforts to get him on campus but that never materialized.  The Beal family was unable to make a visit due to financial reasons and despite the fact he grew up a JJ Redick fan, the top notch prospect never seemed to let others in past last July.  With Duke involved with Rivers, they could afford to back off of Beal, who is a perfect example of watch what a player does, not what he says.  For whatever reason, it is clear now that Beal was always Florida's to lose.

Speaking of Austin Rivers nothing has changed here either.  As we told you long ago, he will make it to a Duke game this season and during his high school season he is unlikely to make any big moves.  In short, he may not officially back off UF until after his season is finished but that, of course, can change.  The Devils feel that Rivers fits their program in every way and Krzyzewski wants to coach him.  It was Rivers and company who originally contacted Duke and Doc wants to make sure his son goes to the right school to develop his skills.  Duke has had loads of success with kids who have NBA lineage.

Nothing has changed with Duke and Roscoe Smith since my last update.  Oak Hill plays an active schedule and the Blue Devils are looking for a time to get him on campus where he can attend a game.  Smith will not be making a sudden decision and he has until spring to decide.  Nate James started working on Smith last June and their relationship is part of the reason why Duke has a legitimate shot at landing a player they could really use.

Duke also remains very active with Quincy Miller and they stay in touch on a regular basis.  Despite recent reports, Miller will not be pulling the trigger anytime soon.

So whether you guys like it or not, there simply isn't a lot going on with recruiting because both the prospects and Duke are in season.  You can expect some visits in the near future and we will let you know as they are solidified, so there is no sense in asking over and over again about some kids.  In short, if there is anything different than what I have been throwing your way, I will let you know.  I will not run with anything until I have thrown it past enough sources to know it is legit information.

With football season over, BDN can now concentrate on hoops alone and that means we'll be bringing you some good December coverage.  We will attend at least three holiday tournaments and that means firsthand views of kids and interviews.  So our premium side is about to take off again after a lull period where, in all honesty, little is going on so it's hard to report something where there is nothing.

I will be chiming in again soon so, until then, let's pull the Devils through. [/private]

Mason Plumlee is out indefinitely with a fractured left wrist

DURHAM, N.C. – Freshman Mason Plumlee is out indefinitely after suffering a fractured left wrist on Wednesday in practice. The fracture will not require surgery to repair and he will be evaluated by the Duke medical staff on a weekly basis.

“Mason took a hard fall in practice on Wednesday that resulted in the wrist injury,” head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “It was an unfortunate play but we are confident that he will make a full recovery. Mason is going to be a very good player for us and we look forward to him getting healthy and returning to the court.”

Plumlee, a 2009 McDonald’s All-America, averaged 12.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 blocks per game in exhibition wins over Pfeiffer and Findlay.

Duke opens the regular season on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:00 p.m. against UNC Greensboro at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Fox Sports South will televise the contest with Bob Rathbun and Mike Gminski calling the game.

Here is a post game audio Q & A with Duke freshman Mason Plumlee done just moments ago.  Mason scored 18 points to go with 12 rebounds in Duke's 128-70 exhibition win over Pfeiffer.  We are headed to ACC Operation Basketball in the morning, so prepare for an onslaught of new interviews.  We still have post game interviews with Ryan Kelly and Kyle Singler we hope to have up tonight.  We'll add more football news as well, but we'll balk on a game story this one time for the score ssays it all.  Just press play -

BDN Premium’s latest Duke Basketball Team and Recruiting Update

There are a lot of special surprises in the works for this Friday's Countdown to Craziness, so be sure to either attend or tune in to this event.  More details are forthcoming, but they want to keep some of the entertainment and activities under wraps.  The promotions for this event are listed at GoDuke.com or the Countdown for Craziness site.

In a recent talk with an assistant coach, I was told that every single player had come back better than they were before.  As always Duke will adjust their team to the personnel at hand.   All three freshman are expected to play key roles in their first season.  Andre Dawkins will be asked to feel some big shoes which formerly belonged to Gerald Henderson.  Ryan Kelly will add versatility and Mason Plumlee will almost certainly start in the post.   Kyle Singler will be allowed more freedom which may mean we'll see what he can do at his natural position.  We've hinted that Nolan Smith could have a breakout year and they will give him more of a leadership role as well.  Jon Scheyer has them excited and there are no worries that he cannot thrive once again as a dual point with Smith.  BDN will bring members the news from Wednesday's season opening press conference with Coach Krzyzewski in a live blog and will have audio up shortly after the gathering.

So far, there are four visitors slated to attend Countdown for Craziness.  [private] Marshall Plumlee leads the pack of prospects and he'll be joined by Quin Cook.  Duke verbals Tyler Thornton and Josh Hairston will also be there.  We will tell you if any others join the frey as the week goes on, so there is no reason to ask about this on the message board.

Now, let's talk about Kyrie Irving.  As some of you have already seen, any calls to Irving will only result in what you already know.  The date for his official announcement is October 22nd and that will be televised by ESPNU.  As we've told you, Irving will visit Kentucky's Midnight Madness, but there is little reason for worry despite anything you are apt to hear.  Irving will be a Dukie so let's just be patient and wait it out.

That said I would like to address recent issues on the message boards where some posters go into a tailspin at what they hear from other sites message boards.  Our policy has long been to deal in facts, not rumors.  Neither myself or the BDN staff will answer all of the rumors for what we tell you is factual and informed.  Please do not send me the "He said, she said," stuff for I can assure you I hear pretty much everything that goes on.  Our sources are as good as they get and our network grows daily.  If you hear something here, you can count on it and our track record speaks for itself.  If there is anything going on, I will tell you what I can, so it isn't always necessary to ask about every little whimper.  We have created a rumor forum for the purpose of containing rumors, propaganda and paranoia.  I will not answer a lot of questions in that forum.  I have also instructed moderators to take a firmer approach in an effort to keep this the best board out there.

Now, back to recruiting news.  Many close to the situation feel that Harrison Barnes is a two team race with Duke and North Carolina.  The Tar Heels have made up some ground and negative vibes have been sent out through various channels in the most heated battle between the two schools since Shane Battier.  No matter what cards the Heels play, Duke can counter and the relationship between Krzyzewski and Barnes has been solid from the start.  UNC is playing catch up and they have done a good job of impressing Barnes, but I cannot see them as being the leader as some suggest.  Maybe there is no leader, but that could change with Barnes official visit to Durham on October 23rd.    Expect Barnes to come in knowing that his friend Kyrie Irving committed the night before and expect Duke to be real and put their best foot forward during the visit.

Speaking of this site blowing up on October 22nd, let me set the scenario for you.  We expect Kyrie Irving to verbal to Duke on Friday and then there is the Pfeiffer exhibition game which we'll cover.  Of course, Harrison Barnes is in town and Duke plays Maryland at home in football, where we will again cover the event.  The next morning I will head to Greensboro, North Carolina for ACC Operation Basketball which kicks off the season with all of the ACC coaches and players from each team.  In short, articles, news and information will be all over the place.  You can bet I will be taking my vitamins in the coming days.  As we have said before, there are times when this site explodes so be prepared for the fireworks.

Duke is still recruiting and staying in contact with Roscoe Smith, but will only turn their attention to him after Harrison Barnes makes his decision.  Of course, Barnes to Duke would like cause Duke to move on to 2011.

Duke is still working on getting Brad Beal to visit Durham, but if Irving and Rivers fall into place, they would likely have enough players at his position.  They really like Beal though, as does most everyone who has seen him play.

The Blue Devils also stay in close contact with Quincy Miller [offered] who they feel is a Duke kid through and through, but with advisers in his ear, this one will almost assuredly go on for a while.

On a football note, recruits have responded very well to Dukes 49-28 win over NCSU and this one is already paying dividends in the class of 2011, especially in state.  Duke is expecting to be healthy for Maryland on the aforementioned super weekend and Cutcliffe will emphasize how to enjoy a win yet still know you have to work hard to earn victories.  Of course, this is new for many Blue Devils and it will be important for them to get a proper mind set for the coming ACC season.

Lastly, we'll talk of Austin Rivers.  Rivers has officially opened his recruitment up for Duke and it is Duke and Florida for his services.  Expect Rivers to concentrate on his coming high school season and then make his decision.  You all know by now that I am calling Duke in this one and yes I feel very confident about that.  I am very excited having watched Rivers adoringly on the AAU circuit in about 15 games.
