Duval Suspension Changes Complexion vs Bowie State

Trevon Duval

Duke University announced earlier today that starting freshman point guard, Trevon Duval would miss tomorrow's exhibition game against Bowie State.

Here is the brief statement released earlier, "Duke freshman guard Trevon Duval is suspended for the Blue Devils’ exhibition game vs. Bowie State on Saturday, Nov. 4, due to a violation of team standards."

The Blue Devils will now be a totally different team when they take the court tomorrow against Bowie State at 1:00 in Cameron Indoor Stadium.  But this could be an opportunity for a big Duke team to face off against smaller and quicker players.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski will use the game as a teaching opportunity in more ways than one.  Many of the ACC opponents ahead will be guard heavy teams and this game allows him to address that.

During Duvals absence, expect Grayson Allen to take on the role of point guard with some help from Jordan Goldwire.  Allen ran the point with mixed success a season ago, and Goldwire has shown the ability to play alongside players.

It is worth noting that Krzyzewski thought Goldwire played well with the first team guys in the last exhibition game.  But he also stated he was not as pleased with his play with guys off the bench.

Duke will also get a chance to see how their long and big team handles ball pressure and advancing the ball up the court.  This game should give us an idea on who is ready to help handle the ball should situations like this come about from foul trouble.

Bowie State starts four guards and a center or front court player.  As mentioned earlier, Duke will face several multiple guard lineups this season.

As for Duval, we will have to wait and see if Krzyzewski reveals the situation during tomorrow's post game press conference.  He may just keep things internal, but at this time Duval is not expected to miss more than one game.

Duval is the clear cut choice to run the point guard position for this seasons team.  Unfortunately, his suspension will deter some progress with concern to team chemistry.

Duval scored 7 points while dishing out 3 assists in the Blue Devils over Northwest Missouri State.  Duke will open the regular season a week from today against Elon in Cameron Indoor Stadium in a game that tips at 7:00.

Both the last exhibition game against Bowie State and the opener with Elon will be carried by the ACC Network via ESPN.
