Time to pull yourself up by your boot straps

Goliath can rumble around his landscape and defeat a lot of foes along the way but once in a blue moon David will come along and take careful aim with his rock and slay the giant.

In a sense that's what happened last evening when a not so well known Lehigh team knocked off the traditional power in an upset heard round the world.

Even late this afternoon, ESPN.com is still running the upset as it's top headline and poor Blue Devil followers have to turn on CBS and hear the likes of UNC alumnus Kenny Smith gloating in public despite the fact that media is supposed to act in an objective manner.

That's the way it is when your team is coached by the winningest coach in NCAA history and a program that has set the standard or model of sustained excellence.

It will not get any easier for the Blue Devil Nation be it the team or fans for the haters and there are many, will take shot after shot at the supposed demise of Duke.

Make no mistake, this Blue Devils team should not have lost to a 15 seed in a Greensboro Coliseum that has been akin to Cameron West in the past several years.

Many of those 10 of 14 ACC Tournament Championships happened in the facility and the Blue Devils seemed poised to face Xavier tomorrow but every now and then the basketball God throws you a curve ball and the pitch was a nasty one in this case leaving the Blue Devil locker room in disbelief.

This years team has been a victim of lofty expectations despite the loss of Kyrie Irving, Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler and there was really no way they could have achieved a lot more than they did.

This team never really developed that one true leader and that's something which is a must but some players personalities just don't fit the mold.

The Blue Devils hid a lot of weaknesses all season long and for the most part had a great season, finishing a game out of the regular season title and having won against a loaded field in Hawaii.

In the end, somehow, someway, the offense sputtered in a miserable fashion and an improved defense simply could not stay in the lane of victory while it was further developed with the loss of Ryan Kelly.

There were times in the loss to Lehigh where it seemed like the opposition was playing the vaunted man to man defense has played a part in so many wins at Duke and that was disturbing.

But one cannot take away a thing from Lehigh for they put it all out there for 40 minutes and played in a consistent and edgy manner the whole game and quite frankly, they did what it took to win by making huge players when they were needed.

Like the Florida State loss in the ACC Tournament, Duke just could not find a stop when they most needed one and the vision of a Mountain Hawk breaking down court for a dunk still haunts many.

But it is in a bitter defeat that some players find themselves and you have to experience the pain of a loss in basketball to enjoy the victories.

In recent years the Duke fan base has become spoiled beyond belief, demanding perfection and expectations come with the turf, but those same fans need to on occasion take a loss in in order to get hungry again and realize victories are not a given.

It tickles me how some feel sorry for themselves and lash out on message boards questioning everything from what  flavor Gatorade was the team drinking to some really out there conspiracy theories.

Yep!  A loss for Duke is a big deal and there is simply no short cut to deal with the pain but some average perspective should allow the fan base and the program to absorb this loss.

It's a sunny day in Durham on the outside, but there is a lot of clouds in the minds of many and sometimes, it's just the way it goes.

But Duke Basketball is alive and well and they'll be  heard from again. And maybe in next years tournament they'll be the one doing the heart breaking.

A friend once told me there are times when you simply need to pull yourself up by the boot straps and man or woman up.  This is one of those times when the entire Blue Devil Nation should consider following sound advice.

The joy of Duke Basketball hasn't gone away forever, just for a few dreary days.

Duke set to take on the hungry Hokies

When the Blue Devils take to the court this evening in Atlanta they'll face a hungry Virginia Tech team that will fight tooth and nail to pull off an upset.  The Hokies stand at 16-16 and they need a win to qualify for a NIT berth.  The Hokies have for the most part have caught a lot of bad breaks this season and most of their losses have been close and they hope their 68-63 win over Clemson is a stepping stone to remain alive.

Erick Green played with a chip on his shoulder tallying 24 points as the games high scorer.  Duke will need to keep him in check for he drove the lane at will against Clemson, hitting a critical bucket down the stretch.  The Blue Devils must also find a way to slow Dorenzo Hudson who played well against them in Cameron and the senior will lay it on the line with his career on the verge of ending.

The Hokies had a lot of success on second chance points, so blocking them out will be a key for the Blue Devils as well.  With Ryan Kelly sidelined, the front court loses a good bit of depth, their third leading scorer and more importantly five fouls.  In short, Mason and Miles Plumlee must not get into early foul trouble or it could flat out spell trouble.

Duke will likely go to their bench in this game and they need some kids to step up their game.  It would be nice for Duke to see Andre Dawkins go off after a couple of lack luster games.  But the game will come down to the Blue Decvils guard play and all eyes will be on Seth Curry and Austin Rivers, the ACC Freshman of the Year.

This will be Rivers first shot at tournament basketball and how the freshman reacts to the spot light will play a huge factor in the game.  The Hokies would like to see this game in the 60's, so Duke must implement their own tempo but all signs point to a defensive game and there is no reason to think this game will not be a hard fought battle.

Look for Duke to take a little while to adjust to their surroundings but once they do, I think they'll pull ahead and come away with a tough opening game win to advance in the ACC Tournament.  Our pick is Duke 70 Virginia Tech 63.

BDN Post Game – Tyler Thornton talks the win over Virginia Tech

“Yeah, well we also just needed him. The really good teams that we have here, and we have had a lot of them. There are players on those teams that will fight whether they are fresh, medium or completely exhausted, and if you have a few of them or a team of them, then you might win a National Championship. We had five of them in 2010. Tyler is like that as long as Tyler is on the court. He just gives it to you. I really thought out of all of our players. He won’t show up stat wise, but just attitude wise, toughness wise, just what he was saying in huddles, on the court understanding game situations and encouraging his teammates. It was like a ‘Wojo’ type of performance. You don’t recognize the true value of player by his stats but by what he has done. I could talk a long time about that kid. Those things are what I think I value the most in coaching when a kid has that type of will and attitude. It is just beautiful.”  - Mike Krzyzewski on Tyler Thornton.  BDN brings you a one on one with Tyler -

Duke should handle the Hokies

The Duke Blue Devils had little time to celebrate another great road win over Florida State for Virginia Tech is on the horizon at noon tomorrow. The first thing that comes to mind is possible fatigue, but I doubt Krzyzewski will let the Hokies slip up on his Blue Devils nor will the team. You don't earn your way to a tie for first with North Carolina and then blow a winnable game at home.

But the Hokies are not without talent and should Duke be sluggish, they'll hang in the game. I'm expecting a big outing from the brothers Plumlee in this one. Mason who was saddled with early foul trouble should be fresh and Miles is playing like he has something to prove of late.

The danger with the Hokies is that they have nothing to lose and they're fighting to stay out of the bottom three teams as the season winds down. They have a solid guard in Erick Green and Dorenzo Hudson, Victor Davila and Jarell Eddie are all ACC caliber players. The Hokies have a fair amount of depth as well albeit young.

The Hokies want a game in the 60's at best and if Duke allows them to control the early tempo, then this will be one of those ugly games, In ugly, I mean a grinder of a game which is somewhat sloppy and slow. The Blue Devils will try to run at every opportunity in an attempt to break the Hokies spirit early on but considering the fatigue factor for Duke, I feel this will be a somewhat close game. The pick here is Duke 75 Virginia Tech 62
