The Duke Blue Devils logged in an impressive performance tonight in their 91-75 road win over Wake Forest. The Deacons were their usual pesky selves for most of the way led by a spunky effort from Devin Thomas.
When Duke standout Grayson Allen got hit with his fourth foul, he joined Matt Jones on the bench and it seemed Duke was ripe for the upset. Wake suddenly became energized, but the Blue Devils weathered the storm where Marshall Plumlee played his best game as a Blue Devil.
How good was Plumlee? He didn't miss a shot from the field or the free throw stripe on his way to 18 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocked shots in 36 iron man minutes of p;lay. Perhaps even more impressive than his numbers was his ability to lead the four freshman who surrounded him in the games critical stretch.
It's not easy to win in Winston Salem or on the road in the ACC this season. Yet Duke got major production from two freshman on a night when they needed it most. Brandon Ingram starred early and ended the game with 17 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assist and 4 blocked shots and 3 steals. His length gave the Deacs fits on both ends of the court and his stat line proves he's a blossoming star in the making.
Duke also got a serious shot in the arm from Luke Kennard who scored 23 points including knocking down 9 of 9 free throws. Kennard and Ingram really grew up tonight as did Duke as a unit which helps them earn a 2-0 record in ACC play.
The Blue Devils were on fire from the free throw stripe all night long, where they connected on an amazing 25 of 27 shots. This was due to aggressive offensive play where the Blue Devils took the ball inside.
Duke was prepared, well coached and poised. And this poise came from a group of four freshman who had to put up for shut up with Allen and Jones in foul trouble.
Despite said foul trouble. Grayson Allen still scored 24 points to lead Duke. And he played well with the fouls when he returned while knocking down a key three point shot which stalled an attempted Wake Forest.
Duke flipped the script when Devin Thomas went to the bench with his fourth foul and that's when Marshall Plumlee dominated the Deacons inside. The Blue Devils also held Wake Forest scoreless for the last 2:58 of the game.
Other bright spots for Duke tonight were 42 points in the paint and scoring 15 points on Wake turnovers. Duke closed out the win on a 6-0 run. Duke will take on Virginia Tech in Cameron in their next outing on Saturday in a game that tips off at noon.
