Monday Musings – Tidbits on the Duke Programs

AJ Griffin Injury

Considering that the ball is yet to be thrown up at tipoff the last thing anybody wants to hear is that AJ Griffin had suffered an injury to his knee in practice.

According to Mike Krzyzewski, it is a sprain and that is all the details we have at this time. However, the implications are that he will miss some games and that the staff will be extra cautious with him early in the year.

Griffin is already coming off a knee injury that sidelined him a year ago and yes, that was his knee. But there is no reason to think this might be any worse than has been mentioned already.

With an injury, depth comes into question

The Blue Devils roster is not the deepest it has been for the upcoming season. With the injury to Griffin, this comes into focus where Duke will need some guys to step up.

The hope was that a shorter roster would define roles and thus create better chemistry. It can happen that way but one injury can alter the dynamics in this situation as well.

One would think the starters are Mark Williams, Paolo Banchero, Jeremy Roach, Wendell Moore, Theo John and Trevor Keels with Griffin sidelined indefinitely. Okay, I know. That is six players but the point is that lineups will be altered due to matchups.

The next guys in line are the ones who will take on a larger role, Among them is Joey Baker, one of the team's older players and one who is expected to knock down any open look. I think we will see a rush to prep Jaylen Blakes now for past him Duke has five walk-ons. While those walk-ons are much peskier than some may think, it is hard to see them making a major impact on game day.

The one thing Duke may do all season long is walk on eggshells a bit where possible injuries can occur. And that means every player on the roster will need to pull their weight and be willing to play an expanded role.

I am more of a glass half full guy so I am thinking all will be fine with Griffin over time. But with him already coming back from an injury the news is concerning for everyone who wants Coach K to have a full roster available for his last season.

ACC Media Day tomorrow

You will hear a lot more on Duke basketball and the ACC in general for media day takes place in Charlotte, N.C. tomorrow. You can watch some of it via the ACC Network via ESPN. Be sure to follow @bluedevilnation on Twitter for updates from the Duke perspective.

Countdown to Craziness

It will take place on October the 15th and start at 7:00. Masks are required in Cameron this season. I am not a huge fan of them but glad the show is going on and will adhere as should the fanbase. I am encouraged that there have been large football crowds around the country and few issues and hope the trend continues. Duke has about as good of a setup as they can with restrictions in place.

Am I the only one a tad worried about...

Cameron. With the students having a year away one wonders if they will be on top of things or show some rust. Having seen all the tent city folks over the years who site behind me, skipping a year could have an effect. And there were times when some did not show up for certain games. The point is people are really seeking tickets and Cameron should be packed for Coach K's last ride and I am sure someone knows to finetune the logistics to make this happen.

JJ Starling

Yes, Duke is still in this recruiting race but so are the other schools on his list. I have covered recruiting a long time and Duke has never had success with City Rocks players from the Nike circuit. Of course, they have not offered that many, but most of them have always had Syracuse high on their list which is natural with them being from that region of the country. Their players are always fundamentally sound and that is but one of many reasons the staff wants this kid to take notice that they covet him. Starling has only seen his stock rise and will make a decision fairly soon.

A Note on Football

One has to feel for David Cutcliffe and the program for they lost a game against Georgia Tech that they had in their hands. Even Cutcliffe sounded dismayed blaming himself after the loss. So many things went wrong and that reminds people of what life was like before he took over where Duke found many ways to lose a game. Duke is an underdog in every game moving forward and that will make for a long season.

I honestly saw a lot of improvement against the Yellow Jackets, but letting up untimely big plays, terrible 2nd down calls which led to long 3rd downs, yips in the kicking game, the inability to gain a yard on going for it on 4th down and the list goes on will not allow them to flip this thing anytime soon.

Duke Hoops Saftey Protocols

DURHAM – Duke University Athletics has announced health and safety protocols for men’s and women’s basketball events at Cameron Indoor Stadium this season. The policy has been developed in consultation with medical experts at Duke as well as local and state officials.

The plan, which requires all guests to wear a mask as well as present proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test within 72 hours, is detailed below:

·         All guests and staff are required to present proof of a COVID-19 vaccination, which shows two dates for the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines and one date for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

·         Guests and staff who are exempt from or ineligible to receive the vaccine can still attend by showing a negative COVID-19 (antigen or PCR) test result within 72 hours of the game you plan to attend. A test result must be in the form of written medical documentation (paper or electronic copy) and the documentation must include: test result, type of test, entity issuing the result, and the specimen collection date.

·         For those unable to complete a test prior to game day, a testing site operated by SafeSite (testing partner of the ACC for its championship events) will be available in Blue Devil Tower on game day. The rapid antigen test is $45, and all positive antigen tests will be confirmed with a PCR test for no additional charge to guest.

  • Guests and staff may upload their vaccination card or negative test for each event at DukeCheckIn.com. (Please note, DukeCheckIn.com will function, beginning Tuesday, October 12 at 5 p.m. ET)

·         Guests and staff preferring not to submit online can verify in person at one of six (6) verification tent locations prior to entering Cameron Indoor Stadium. Staffing will also be available at these sites to assist with registering on DukeCheckIn.com for future games.

·         A confirmation from DukeCheckIn.com or a wristband from a verification tent must be displayed prior to entering the security screening area at all Cameron Indoor Stadium entrances.

·         Season-long credentialed staff who are vaccinated will be pre-verified before credential distribution and will be permitted entry/exit from the building as needed by presenting their credential at all Cameron Indoor Stadium entrances.

·         Single-game credentialed staff must be verified by DukeCheckin.com or by securing a wristband from a verification tent. Once verified, single-game credentialed staff should enter Cameron Indoor Stadium at the South Credential entrance to receive a verification sticker permitting entry/exit as needed without having to show verification again.

·         All guests and staff ages 5 and older are required to wear a mask upon entry and at all times while inside Cameron Indoor Stadium, except when actively eating or drinking.

·         Children under the age of 12 do not need to provide proof of full vaccination or a negative test result, but they must comply with all other policies, including the mask mandate set by the University.

·         As a reminder, Cameron Indoor Stadium’s existing Bag Policy remains in effect: small bags and personal items (less than 12” x 12” x 6”) are permitted to enter Cameron Indoor Stadium. Guests are strongly encouraged to utilize clear bags for faster entry screening. Backpacks, duffel bags, and all bag types larger than 12” x 12” x 6” are not permitted. Reasonable exceptions may be made for medical or childcare reasons. All bags will be screened prior to entering the stadium.

The policy takes effect with Countdown to Craziness, set for Friday, Oct. 15 at Cameron Indoor Stadium at 7 p.m. ET, and will remain in place for all home men’s and women’s basketball games until further notice.

Duke Hoops Ticket Wait List Established

DURHAM – In advance of what will be an historic Duke men’s basketball season, the Duke University Department of Athletics has established a ticket waitlist program for men’s basketball home games at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Duke men’s basketball tickets are some of the toughest tickets in sports, with secondary market prices often soaring for games at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Due to this season’s anticipated increased demand and the widespread prevalence of counterfeit tickets on secondary markets, fans interested in attending are encouraged to register for the Duke MBB Waitlist.

Those on the waiting list may have the opportunity to purchase tickets, when and if tickets become available. The Duke MBB Waitlist is prioritized first by Iron Dukes’ status and then a first-come-first-served basis to the public.

Iron Dukes members have the first opportunity to purchase available tickets. To become an Iron Dukes member for as little as $100 annually, visit www.GoDuke.Com/IronDukes or call (919) 613-7575. All non-Iron Dukes members will be prioritized on a first-come-first serve basis based upon the date of registration.

It’s Duke for Dereck Lively

The Duke Blue Devils land the nation's top big man when 7 footer Dereck Lively announced that he will ball in Cameron Indoor Stadium next season.

Lively is the real deal and a player who soared up the rankings after showing off top-end improvement over the spring and summer.

The budding star played for Team Final in the Nike EYBL summer league and that organization has produced a lot of top-end prospects over the years.

Duke coach to be, Jon Scheyer and his staff of former Duke teammate Nolan Smith and Chris Carrawell quickly made Lively II an immediate priority when it was learned Mike Krzyzewski would be in his last season in Durham.

The addition of Lively gives Duke a solid four-man class to date. He will join SF, Dariq Whitehead, PF Kyle Filipowski and SG Jaden Schutt in a class that is still forming. It is worth noting that the Blue Devils have

The newest Duke verbal commitment is a possible game-changer on the defensive end where he is tall, long and agile with quick hops. His upside is on the offensive end where he has been working on stretching the court with newly found three-point range.

The Bellefonte, PA. native has a unique skill set that will be attractive to NBA teams where he will in time be a lottery pick. The one thing he will likely have to do is work on adding weight but he is already a force on the blocks where he plays above the rim. The weight he does have is lean muscle, so expect the young man to fill out his frame with natural maturity.

Lively spurned Kentucky and Penn State to play for the Blue Devils.
