Nolan Smith returned to practice today, but is still listed as questionable at this time. "He's okay, he's back at practice," said a nodding Elliot Williams when questioned by the Blue Devil Nation. Smith suffered a concussion and bruised ribs when he ran into a nasty screen from David Neal during the Maryland game.

Many of you are wondering about the injury situation at Duke. Here is the latest as of this afternoon. Lance Thomas and Brian Zoubek. Thomas suffered a left ankle sprain in the first half of the game and is listed as day-to-day. Zoubek suffered a broken nose and is day-to-day. Jon Scheyer also suffered an ankle sprain in the second half on Tuesday and Nolan Smith’s status remains unchanged after sustaining a mild concussion on Feb. 25.
Duke used an early 27-7 run to build a 22 point halftime lead and coast to a 79-54 win over the Virginia Cavaliers. Gerald Henderson and Nolan Smith led the Blue Devils with 18 and 15 points respectively. Jon Scheyer contributed 11 points and was the team's leading rebounder with seven.
Duke utilized tough defense to fuel its offense turning Virginia over 23 times including 17 turnovers in the first half. Duke scored 29 points off of turnovers, while Virginia only managed two points off of nine turnovers. Throughout the game, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski urged the Blue Devils to stay in passing lanes and push the ball off turnovers and rebounds.
Gerald Henderson made a 3-point bucket to start the game and Duke never relinquished the lead. Sylven Landesberg led Virginia with 20 points.
This was an important win for Duke as they were coming off a disappointing loss to Wake Forest on Wednesday. Next up for Duke is a trip to Littlejohn Coliseum to face the Clemson Tigers.
The Duke offense erupted in the second half and that helped the Duke Blue Devils move to 17-1 overall and 3-0 in the ACC with a 73-56 win over N.C. State.
To call this game a tale of two halfs for the Dukies is an understatement. Duke shot 29% from the
field in the first half and 76.9% in the second. The Blue Devils managed to score just 22 points at the break, but came on to roll up 51 in the second half.
“Our offense, as bad as it was in the first half, it was that good in the second half. I thought they played us really hard. I was worried about today’s game for a couple reasons – one, I think State’s good. After that big win against Georgetown, there’s a little bit of a let-down emotionally, crowd-wise and team-wise," said Krzyzewski.
Duke jumped out to an early 8-1 lead, but then went ice cold from the field as if they were sleep walking after Saturday's big win over Georgetown. Duke trailed the Wolfpack the rest of the way, until the 9:27 mark, when back to back Nolan Smith three pointers gave them a 52-49 lead.
N.C. State rode the scoring punch of Ben McCauley and Brandon Costner who scored 15 points each, but they were shut out down the stretch when the vaunted Duke defense kicked in. The Pack scored a single point in the last 4:41 of the game.
Duke finally broke the game open when David McClure made a steal and hit Gerald Henderson for a dunk and a 62-55 lead.
"There’s game pressure – I thought the second half, the start of the second half, we had great energy. Gerald, especially in the first eight minutes, was great . Nolan – I thought this was his best game, and he’s put three really terrific games together. And Kyle playing with four fouls for eight minutes. It was a one-possession game, and all of sudden we got two steals and turned them into buckets. McClure was huge for us, especially on that top ball screen. It was a hard-fought win for us, but with the score you’d think we kind of walked throgh this," stated Krzyzewski.
Henderson left no doubt that he was the player of the game, continuing his torrid play of late. He put his team on his back on the way to scoring 21 points to go with 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 key steals. The junior continues to play at a very high level and that has been a Godsend in that some other Devils have been in a slump.
“I knew I was going to have to be way more aggressive than I was. Kyle wasn’t playing like he usually does. Jon wasn’t hitting like he usually does. So I guess I kind of took it on my shoulders. My teammates were going to me, Coach was going to me, and I knew that if he was going to call some plays for me I had to make something happen,” said Henderson.
N.C. State Coach Sydney Lowe said, "He (Gerald Henderson) took over the game for a period there and that’s the one guy I talked about in pre-game to the media. He can change the game and he did it again tonight. That’s what he expects of himself and I’m sure that’s what his team expected. He did exactly what a leader is supposed to do. He took over.”
Jon Scheyer had a miserable night scoring a late three pointer, but led his team with 5 assists. Scheyer has now had four sub par scoring games.
Brian Zoubek and Lance Thomas also continued to struggle on the offensive end of the court, but there were several shots in which the seven footer altered the shot. But Zoubs will have to learn to
finish his shot with more authority to get back on track and Thomas needs to find his way back into being a key contributor down the stretch is Duke is to continue their winning ways come the meat of a tough ACC schedule.
Kyle Singler was saddled with four fouls and that made it hard for him to be aggressive on the boards in that he had just 4 rebounds tonight. But Singler is Duke's best interior defender and his 17 points cam at key moments in the second half enabling a late Duke run.
The aforementioned three pointers from Nolan Smith were big and he finished with 13 points but failed to dish a single assist. Paulus had one assist and nine key points off the bench, but Kryzyzewski would most certainly like to see more distribution from the point guard position, although he called this Nolans best game this season.
Despite some struggles, any ACC win is huge in a tough conference. Duke got things rolling late
and escaped what would have been a trp for most teams. It was an evening when the weather caused some no shows and Cameron was nowhere near it's best.
It was clear that Coach K and his staff came out in the second half and got a bit more animated than usual. On a night with so many odd intangibles, there is no way to measure how important that support was.
[private]Starting point guard Nolan Smith will be ready go in the Blue Devils ACC opener against Virginia Tech this Sunday night. Smith has practiced the last two days. "Nolan practiced the whole time today. He practiced the
whole time and he looks good. He wouldn't even tell you he was injured if it wasn't for the knee pads," said Duke player Kyle Singler during today's press conference. "He's meant a lot to our team and is ready to go," said Gerald Henderson. Smith was held out of the last half versus Loyola, Maryland after tweaking his knee.
Smith is averaging 10.9 PPG to go with 2.3 APG. The injury was a left knee bruise.[/private]
[private]The Blue Devil Nation brings you an afternoon question and answer session with Duke point guard Nolan Smith -
Hey Nolan, how are you! So, you're ready to get back on the court?
Yeah, yeah. Since the loss at Michigan we've been practicing hard and competing. Now it's time to get back out there and take care of the opponent.
I see you guys were practicing in Cameron instead of the practice facility today. Was that to get acclimated to the environment again?
Yes, it's better to practice where you are going to play to get acclimated to the rims again.
You've had a long time to think about the Michigan loss ...
As a mature team we are ready to bounce back and play the way we did against Purdue. Having the days off
we got back to the fundamentals. It's going to help a lot - we've worked hard. We had some regular team practices for an hour and a half or two hours. We've had some individual workouts. The last two days have been team practices after we've been done with exams.
Can you talk of the progress you've made after being a backup last season and now starting?
It took a long summer with effort and hard work. I'm proud of myself, I've really stuck to my game and hopefully we can make a run towards the national championship. My team is proud of me and I plan on getting better as the year goes along. This summer I went to Philadelphia and worked out with Michael Beasley and De Andre Jordan. We spent days lifting and playing in the morning sna evenings. I left my family for the summer to be with them, but that's the kind of sacrifice you have to make sometimes. I'm very confident. I'm confident with the ball, my defense and everything I do.
Do you get along with Greg Paulus or is it a rivalry between you two?
I get along great with Greg. We push each other in practice. This last week has really been a battle for both of us. We both want to get better going into this ACC and last couple of non conference games. We are pushing each other to get better and Greg has been playing great in practice. I think you will see a lot of him come the UNC-Asheville game.
Has the team gotten together after the Michigan loss and said, okay we've got to get it together or get past this?
Yes, we had about a two hour meeting as a team to take a look at ourselves and talk about certain things from that game and standards we have to live up to. We can;'t take days off - we've learned a lot even without playing this past week.
Looking back on the game, what was it that went wrong?
Our number one standard, defense and rebounding. They did whatever they wanted - they drove us, they wanted it more that day.
Are the exam periods mentally draining?
A little bit. We have like two exams right after practice and then you might stay up until three in the morning. That's something all of us have to do as a student athlete. You can't play if you don't get the good grades, so ...
Do you have a PG you model yourself after?
Chris Paul. He's incredible the way he goes through traffic. He has the confidence that he can blow by anybody anytime.
You had mentioned Micheal Beasley earlier. Do you stay in touch with him?
Yeah, we talk all the time. He's in Miami. He's actually going to be at the New Jersey game, he plays after us that night so I will probably get to see him and he'll get to see me play for the first time. It's probably going to be exciting. He's my little brother, but now he's like my big brother since he's at the higher level. So I'm the little brother now. He stays in my ear.
How far do you feel like you want to be as a college player?
I feel like I'm very far away. I made a big jump from last year, but I know there is a lot of things I can do better - a lot of plays I can make that I'm not making right now. As the year goes along I watching film. Going into my junior season and my senior season I expect to be a better player.
