The Opening Tip

Duke (2-0), ranked ninth in the AP preseason poll and eighth in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll, faces Charlotte (2-0) on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 6:05 p.m. in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off. Tuesday’s contest will be televised by ESPN with Brad Nessler and Jimmy Dykes calling the action.

The Last Time Out
Duke improved to 2-0 on the year with a 74-49 win over Coastal Carolina on Monday. Kyle Singler led the way with 23 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots, while freshman Andre Dawkins had 13 points and three assists. Senior Jon Scheyer and sophomore Miles Plumlee added 10 points each. Duke held Coastal Carolina to 28.6 percent (16-of-56) shooting for the game.

Series History
Duke is 2-0 all-time against Charlotte. The Blue Devils topped 100 points in both games, winning 111-94 on Dec. 1, 1990 and 104-82 on Jan. 18, 1992. Both games were played at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

NIT Season Tip-Off History
Duke is 19-2 all-time in the NIT Season Tip-Off, including a 9-0 mark in first and second round games played at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils have won nine straight games in the tournament. Duke won NIT Season Tip-Off championships in 1985, 2000 and 2005.

  • Junior Kyle Singler recorded his 14th career double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds in Monday’s win over Coastal Carolina. The 23-point effort marked the 17th game of his career with 20+ points.
  • Jon Scheyer has nine assists and zero turnovers in 74 minutes of action this season. The Northbrook, Ill., native had five assists in 37 minutes of play on Monday. Scheyer boasts a 1.75:1 assist-to-turnover ratio in 106 career games.
  • Sophomore Miles Plumlee is averaging 10.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game after recording 1.8 points and 1.4 rebounds per game a year ago.
  • Jon Scheyer has now scored in double figures 78 times in his career. He has 10+ points in all 14 games since moving to point at the end of the 2008-09 season.
  • Freshman Andre Dawkins reached double figures in scoring for the first time in his career with 13 points Monday night. He made three three-point field goals in the game and also dished out three assists (with zero turnovers).
  • Duke guards Jon Scheyer and Andre Dawkins have combined for 14 assists and zero turnovers through two games.
  • Kyle Singler is shooting 58.9 percent (17-of-29) from the field, including 40.0 percent (4-of-10) from three-point range, through two games.

  • Junior Nolan Smith will make his season debut on Tuesday. Smith served a two-game suspension for a violation of rules pertaining to summer league participation.
