Grayson Allen Talks Duke Win Over UNC

23Grayson Allen is not the kind of competitor who shows any fear and that trait went a long ways in helping Duke to earn a win over North Carolina.  Allen hit two critical free throws that turned out to be the last point scored as the Blue Devils defense helped the team win their 20th game of the season.  Here are the complete post game comments from Allen in the victorious Duke locker room.

What was it like to play in a tough game in this kind of environment?

Our last game was a really tough one but as far as toughness down the stretch and fighting fatigue with the numbers that we had ... it was just a really, really tough game and I couldn't be more proud of the team.

His answer to being asked how he felt when Duke was down eight and had consecutive shots blocked ...

We don't stop attacking or worry about shots getting blocked.  Obviously you will make adjustments but we are always worried about the next play.  The next game, the next play or everything.

How proud are the coaches with the performance.  Did they mention the heart, the effort or being down to five guys?

That was the first thing said when we got to the locker room.  He just told us that he was so proud of us and that we played with a lot of heart and really fought down the stretch.  We played tough and together.

What about he last two free throws you made ....

I better not put us in the same situation as last time.  I wanted to make them and I did.

Did you expect UNC to call timeout on that last time down?

You never know.  Either way, they are a team that;s almost best when they are pushing it after a miss, so they pushed the ball down and we got the stop..

On how Duke approached the 2nd half ...

We actually slowed it down a little bit more.  We weren't pushing it up because of our numbers and mainly were just looking for match ups, ways to attack and get in the paint.  And for a long stretch there we just got the ball to Brandon because he is such a special player and he hit some really big and tough shots for us.  Coach just really trusted us to make plays on instinct and stay in our offense.  On that last possession we just came out of the huddle and said we can do this and that's what we did.  There were times in the second half where they could really put us away but we just kept fighting back.  At the end of the game when it is close like that, we trust guys to make plays and make shots.  Luke hit a huge three for us and that might have been the biggest shot down the stretch.

On how Duke will adjust without Matt Jones ...

I think so. we hope his injury is not too serious.  We made a short bench shorter.  We showed ourselves no matter what the situation, we can do it.

On Brandon Ingram and his 1st half shooting struggles ...

Well, he's not a guy who shows a lot of emotion and I stay in his ear a lot to keep it up.  We don;t care if he misses seven or eight shots in a row, we just want him to keep trying and keep attacking.

On his aggressive playing style ,,,

That;s just how I play.  Every program I have ever played in that is how I was taught to play.  How to play tough and be a competitor.  I mean how can you not want to be in a big game like this with a hostile crowd.  It;s the kind of things you dream of, so you have to be ready for this kind of game.

On his role when Matt Jones went out ...

When Matt went down I had to use my voice more.  Marshall is a very emotional leader and Matt is always the one that brings us in the huddle, so I kind of stepped into that position.  I tried to bring us together after timeouts and after stoppages and that kind of thing.  I just talked to the guys and at the end I just told them we need to win this last round to come out on top.

Answer to N & O when asked if he feels like Duke stole one ...

No, I don't feel that way at all, we were in a fight and we played good basketball down the stretch and put ourselves in a good position to win.
