Grayson Allen hit a bank shot over Devon Hall at the buzzer to give Duke their best win of the season over Virginia. Mike Krzyzewski and his Blue Devils were in pivotal ACC battle and he drew up the play for Allen on his 69th birthday. As the ball went in, Cameron Indoor Stadium erupted and the entire team, managers and others piled on top of Allen at mid court. It was a very physical play where the officials seemed to have swallowed the whistle, and that meant Allen had to will the shot in. Here is what the star sophomore had to say post game -
What was going through your mind when you hit that shot? I know it's hard to describe it but put it into words the best you can.
It really is hard to describe, when Coach drew up the play and I knew it was coming to me., I really wanted to go out and make a play and so I did. Once I made the shot I just started to release all my excitement, yelling and felt ten to fifteen guys com and jump on me. I will probably hurt in some spots but it was worth it.
Some people say that time slows down during something like that. Did that happen for you?
I knew the guys who was guarding me was real strong, so I had to be tough and go up strong to finish. I tried to go through his body and get some space for my hands to release the shot.
Do you remember the last time you hit a buzzer beater?
I don' think I have hit one really, not at the end of the game but maybe like one at the half.
As a kid did you do the 3-2-1 thing, buzz?
All the time out in my driveway. It was really surreal for me with this being my dream school. I could have done it 100 times over and it wouldn't have been as good as that.
Grayson, on atonement ...
As soon as I missed those two free throws I wanted to get the ball back in my hands to make up for it. Malcolm was making great plays the whole game. When we called that timeout I was hoping coach would draw up something for me.
Was this an even more special moment for you with it being on Coach K's birthday?
I think if he were to tell you what he wanted for his birthday, he would have said a win, so it felt great to give him that.
