Future of Duke Punting Looks Bright

To many scouts, Will Monday is the top punter in the class of 2011 in the country. That’s good news for Duke fans, as he’s a solid commitment to the Blue Devils and was recently in Durham for the Alabama game. BDN caught up with Will shortly after his visit.

“The visit was a lot of fun. It wasn’t really the game I was expecting, but it was a great atmosphere and it was great to catch up with the coaches, who I hadn’t seen in awhile,” Will said when describing his visit. “My parents came too and had a great time. We’re really excited to get up there next year.”

Over the summer, Will solidified his reputation as one of the best punters in the class, taking top honors out of 130 punters at the Kohl Punters’ Camp in Wisconsin in July for the second year in a row. He has also won accolades at the invitation-only “Top 12” Chris Sailer Camp the past 2 summers. Scouts have called him “the most college-ready punter in the 2011 class.” The Duke coaches expect Will to come in and compete with Alex King for the starting job right away next year.

As expected, Will’s senior year at Flowery Branch High School in Georgia is off to a perfect 4-0 start. “We have a strong defense and got a big win two weeks ago,” Will said about his team, “the offense is slowly coming along with a new quarterback and I think by the 7th or 8th game they will be hitting all cylinders and roll into the playoffs. Individually, I’ve had an excellent start for my senior year and I just want to keep it going and help the team out with good field position and getting back to a state championship.”

Will plans to take his official visit to Duke for the Boston College game in November, and has no other visits scheduled for the fall. Highlights of Will’s junior year can be viewed here.

Tyler Adams is taking a low key approach

Adams defends the paint

When you stand at 6-9 and weigh in at 254 pounds it's hard not to be noticed but Duke verbal commitment Tyler Adams is laying a bit low.  Adams has been the subject of a lot of rumors of late but he told BDN that there was nothing to it.  "Naw, naw, thats just rumors, something that got out," said Adams in a recent chat with BDN Premium.

Adams continued, "I've been working [private] out real hard and trying to get my academics straight to get ready for the season." That season begins in the first week of November where he will try to help his team break in some newcomers to their lineup.

Tyler has been adjusting his game to his size and he, as we've told you before, loves to mix it up down low.  In fact, when BDN listed the quote "I like to bang," in a past articles headline the quote made it's way around becoming a coined phrase to describe the big kid from Mississippi.

"I don't think I'm growing any taller but I am filling out with more muscle now.  My conditioning coach has been pushing me really hard," said Adams in our latest prospect update.

It had been a couple of weeks since he talked with anyone from the Duke staid he stated  that Coach James kept in touch and discussed his progress and goals.

Adams said that he was working on his turnaround jumper and a hook shot.  "I'm trying to play with a bit more finesse on the offensive end, working on my shot," said Adams.

"They [Duke] want to use me as a back to the basket guy, one they can throw the ball into.  They talked about Shelden Williams and how they want to get a big man that they can depend on."

The Adams family lives 12 hours by car away from Durham and that prevents him from coming to Countdown to Craziness but he said he hopes to make it to some games this year.  BDN will let you know if anything worth mentioning happens with Adams in future updates.

Tennessee offensive lineman Cody Robinson set to announce decision

Cody Robinson is a 6’4” 305 pound offensive guard from McMinnville, Tennessee. He recently visited Durham to take in the Duke vs. Alabama game and BDN caught up with him to get his thoughts on his visit and his senior year.

“The visit went really good. I really enjoyed talking with all of the coaches and the players a lot,” he said. The visit to Durham capped off what has been a busy few months, and Cody will announce his college decision on Friday at noon at Warren County high school.

Warren County has started their season with a 2-3 record, getting a big win last week. “We definitely have some issues with being young and starting seven freshmen,” Cody said, “but we just got a big win.” As a senior team captain, he’s been piling up the tackles so far this year, and said that the offensive line has had a pretty good year so far.

Cody holds scholarship offers from nine schools, and has received interest from many more. Duke was the first to offer and has been recruiting Robinson the longest; Kentucky was his most recent offer, which came in June. Over the summer, Cody attended camps at Kentucky, Tennessee, Duke, Arkansas, Middle Tennessee, and Vanderbilt. He also fit in trips to Memphis and Syracuse.

Cody recapped his summer visits as follows:

Kentucky: “They offered me right after camp. It’s a good school and an up-and-coming program. Lexington is a really nice city.”

Tennessee: “I’ve always loved Tennessee. There’s lots of changes going on there with the program, with a new coaching staff.”

Duke: “They’re going to get really big, really fast. They have great coaches and some really good players. They’re fixin’ to take off.”

Arkansas: “They’ve got a nice thing going there and have really nice facilities.”

Middle Tennessee: “It’s really close to home – just 35 minutes from my house, and they’re just really good people there.”

Memphis: “That’s a good staff that’s done really well in their first year, it’s definitely another up-and-coming program.”

Syracuse: “When I visited in June, it was 25 degrees cooler there than in Tennessee. It was really nice and wasn’t what I was expecting at all. When you think New York, you always think the city, but Syracuse is really nice with mountains and it’s very laid back.”

Vanderbilt: “It’s about 90 minutes from my house. They’re going through a coaching change there.”

Cody also holds scholarship offers from Western Kentucky, Tulane, and Chattanooga.

Cody’s father, Ray Robinson, was an offensive lineman at Tennessee under Head Coach Johnny Majors and Offensive Line Coach Philip Fulmer in the mid-1980s. Cody has lived up to his father’s legacy, becoming one of the top offensive line prospects in the state of Tennessee. The program he chooses on Friday will be getting a good football player and a very good young man.

Duke Set For Their In Home Visit With Standout Talent Austin Rivers

Coach K will be in home with Austin Rivers tonight - BDN Photo

Coach Mike Krzyzewski and assistant coach Chris Collins will head to Florida later today where they'll have their in home visit with the River family.  They are there of course for the services of Austin Rivers a prospect they have pursued since he opened his recruitment back up.  Rivers is one of the consensus top three players in his class.  His abilities on the court would fit well in the Duke system which allows freedom to their guards to create and make plays.  Rivers will visit Duke during Countdown to Craziness on October 15th where he will join several other prospects to take in the Duke atmosphere.  Rivers is the son of Boston Celtics coach and former Atlanta Hawk standout Glenn "Doc" Rivers.

Okay Duke fans, it’s time to turn out in force and wear your royal blue with pride

DURHAM - If you are out and about in the Durham area today, you can already see those Bama flags with that curious elephant on them flap about on out town cars.  The invasion of Bama faithful is on as the nations number one team has even the most casual fans excited about what is turning into an event unlike any other seen in these parts for some time.

N.C. State and North Carolina are just mere miles from the Duke campus but in Tuscaloosa, the Tide is the only game in town and state with the exception of their rival, the Auburn Tigers.  Duke Coach David Cutcliffe warned of the invasion during his weekly press conference and it's as if he knew exactly what to expect.  He mentioned that the visiting fans would be walking around the campus and stadium to check it out and sure enough after leaving Coach K's Thursday press conference, there they were strolling around campus on two full days before the game kicks off.

But the Tide fans weren't the only curious ones.  Duke fans came by to see the erected bleachers which transform Wallace Wade Stadium into something much different than some are used to.  In the open end of the stadium there is a huge section of bleacher brought in from the games hype.  Across the top, there are three other sections on each side.

There is even a smaller section in the closed in of the stadium which is reserved for a ton of Duke Football prospects, coaches and others affiliated with the program in some way.  The word is concessions are stocking up as if  two games being played but let us warn you that going to get your soda's and such could cause you to miss big portions of the game so plan accordingly.

Another suggestion is to leave as if this was a 1:00 game for traffic will be at an all time high and confusion will reign as the invading horde tries to find their way around.    In short, there is no trial run for the circus, but that is half the fun for unless you are there you cannot witness what is sure to be a sight for the local fans.

This is the game where Duke fans should all wear their royal blue with pride and cheer like they never have before and back the team and program no matter how the game progresses on the field.  This team deserves that support for they are young.  Coach Cutcliife deserves this for he is truly turning the once moribund program around.  The Administration deserves this for they allowed this game to remain in Durham instead of selling out for short term bucks.

Get out there and tailgate folks!  Go to the Chapel and or line the way as the Blue Devils march through two hours before game time on their way to Wade.  Simply get out there and enjoy the atmosphere of big time college football and learn from the experience.  And when you leave you will not only say, "I was there," but you will take away a unique experience and a part of the process of growing the program to where they desire to be.

Alabama is good.  Heck, they are real good, awesome if you will.  You can almost see Godzilla mving in from tree tops afar.  As solid as they are though, too much local focus has been on them instead of our own.  When you are watching the game, keep in mind that the vast majority of these Devils will return next season and that a solid quarterback in Sean Renfree is just beginning his career.

Very few people expect Duke to win but that's okay for sometimes you can actually win a bit in a loss.  This may be the case for Duke in that they can measure themselves against future NFL starters and carry any positives over into the rest of the season.  They will see the highest level of football and can take away gains from the experience.

And for gosh sakes, cheer them on even in the toughest moments.  Be heard on third down plays despite what may have happened in the previous possession for just one stop can lead to good things.  It will seem like a Alabama North game to many but this is still our house and our turf.  Let's not roll over and concede without a fight both in the stands and on the field.

Your team needs you.  Cheer loud, cheer often and wear your Duke Blue and if you are on the fence about going, if you don't you can never say, "I was there when the nations best team came to town and the place was packed."  Don't fret the worries about a ticket if you don't have any, just go and things will work out.  This is a call to arms for Duke fans from BDN.  Don't let "your" Blue Devils down.

The spirit of Wallace Wade will be roaming about, but will you?  Bring the spirit!
