Monday Musings – It’s Duke and Carolina

Now you know all I am going to talk about in this weeks Monday Musings is Duke v. Carolina week.  BDN will begin it's coverage Monday afternoon when we'll talk to the Duke players and the man himself Coach Mike Krzyzewski before heading to Chapel Hill to take in what Roy Williams has to say.  We'll remain for the Duke at North Carolina women's game. and on Tuesday we'll feature a lot of tidbits and coverage before Wednesday evenings big game with a streaking Tar Heels team in Cameron.  We'll be on the scene early for this Wednesdays game in an attempt to bring you a  a Duke-centric experience.

Duke-Carolina, there is nothing like it!

If you've ever attended a Duke v. North Carolina Basketball game in person you might equate it to a religious experience.  The atmosphere is fever pitch and you can literally feel the emotion and electricity before, during and after the game.  Fans are atuned to every move on the court, each turnover painful to the marrow, each great play giving you a total body rush and every play seeming like it could make or break your teams ability to win.  There have been Duke-Carolina games in Cameron when it got so loud it seemed like a jet aircraft was taking off, a deafening noise that vibrates your whole body.  There have also been times when a player in the hated light blue silenced the minions as well.  It can be a roller coaster of emotion and I've seen grown men soaked with sweat, gnashing their teeth and acting like they would nowhere else in life. It's Duke v. North Carolina and there is simply nothing like it be it in person or on television.  It's quite simply the game everybody circles, one which the entire nation pays notice to and one that effects the way of life for the fan bases involved.

And the Tar Heels are streaking

There is no way around the fact that North Carolina is coming into Wednesdays game on a tear.  They've not only won 11 of their last 12 games, they've also done so in a decisive manner, save the Georgia Tech game.  The Tar Heels have also been rejuvenated by the play of freshman point guard, Kendall Marshall who put on an assist clinic against Florida State where his team won by 20 points.  That's the same team that Duke lost to badly on the road.  No team in the country is playing with more confidence right now, save Ohio State.  And when the polls come out later today, expect another jump in the rankings adding more hype to the game.

The Women start it off this evening

It's true that UConn handled formerly undefeated Duke in grand fashion but surely we've learned by now that one game where the wheels come off is not the harbinger of death.  Ask the UNC and Duke men about their losses to Georgia Tech and St. John's.  Duke, rated #3, bounced back by throttling a highly ranked Miami team in Cameron which went unnoticed but tonight they travel to Chapel Hill to take on their arch rival #15 North Carolina in a game many will talk about.  It should be a good game with both teams being atop the conference standings and it's always entertaining.  Tickets are still available, so head on over and support your team and kick off rivalry week right.

Tickets?

A quick trip around scalper land shows that scoring a couple of tickets to the Duke-UNC game in Cameron will set you back a minimum of 1000 bucks and the average is about 750 to 1000 duckies a ticket.  This is one of those games where people are literally hanging off air conditioning vents high atop the birds nest trying to stick their head around to get a view.  The question is how do those people get up there to begin with?  I've seen many fans strike out on game day only to have to hustle to a spot on campus to watch the game.  The overflow applies to media as well where everybody in their brother suddenly wants credentials and many of them end up having to watch the game on TV in the Bill Brill Media Room in Cameron.

Football Recruiting

Perhaps you haven't noticed but BDN has been posting all football recruiting articles for free and yes, these are the same types included in subscription packages elsewhere.  We'll take them to premium in due time, but for now, we want to cast a light on Duke Football and that means you can get a lot of great information from our recruiting analyst Patrick Cacchio.  Be sure to link and spread the word for football fans to visit and read about the many juniors Duke is getting involves with.

The 2010-11 Duke Blue Devils prepare for the stretch

DURHAM - When Duke takes on Boston College this Thursday evening, it'll be their 20th game of the 2010-11 season.  I don't know about you, but for me the season is flying by.  In fact, it seems like a few months ago I was on the court in Indianapolis watching a group of joyous Blue Devils celebrate a national championship.

Coming into the season, Duke fans were giddy over the prospect of another title, especially with the arrival of Kyrie Irving, one of the best point guards ever to come out of New Jersey.  Ironically, Irving went down in New Jersey after stepping on Matt Howard's foot a mere eight games into the season.  Howard of course, plays for Butler the team Duke beat to win their fourth national title.

Irving's absence dominated the lips of many Duke fans for a long, long time, so much so that a portion of the season seemed to be taken for granted or lost in the shadow of his much talked about toe.  It has now become clear that if Irving does come back, that he'll need to get into playing shape, but most fans would rather have an 80% Irving than none at all.

His injury caused an always unwanted in season adjustment, where Duke, who was running at will suddenly went to more of a half court game.  The style is not as pretty but last seasons team used a similar half court sets and look what happened to them.  Of course, it is hard to repeat no matter who the cast of players might be and for Duke to make it to Houston, Texas for the Final Four, it'll take some luck along the way for they are each opponents main target and or their big game.

But let's keep in mind that some teams make their own luck and that is generally evident from improvement on the court.  Suppose Irving comes back, that would be great and he'd add that much needed ability to stretch the court.  But the lessons his teammates have learned in his absence will be of major value, especially when they face critical half court situations during March Madness.

There has yet to be a third scoring option step up since the untimely injury and now Duke enters the stretch run with just a dozen games left in the regular season to find one.  Ryan Kelly has showed the ability to do so of late, but the key will be if he can find consistency.  After all, there is usually no doubt that Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler will show up, but there are occasions when any solid player goes cold and that means others have to step in.

Each season is a new challenge and each team is handled differently. The Duke Coaches have had to adjust their game plan with the injury of Kyrie Irving.

Last season Duke had three seniors in Jon Scheyer, Lance Thomas and Brian Zoubek.  This season they have but two in the aforementioned Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler.  Seniors have been through the wars and last years really stepped up their game and left with something special, a national title.

But last seasons three seniors had Singler and Smith behind them while this season as seniors have far less experience, so there is a major drop off from a year ago in seasoning where Miles Plumlee is the only junior on a team full of sophomores and freshman.  Duke is still a young team past two seniors, and yes, I played the young card.

Then again, Irving is young as well but he had a savvy about him that is rare, yet he was still learning the game.  Even so, Irving made Duke better, a legitimate number one if you will.  Furthermore, he was the third scoring option.

During his absence Seth Curry has had a golden opportunity to step up but he is seemingly adjusting to the speed and physical nature of the division one game. Andre Dawkins has showed flashes of brilliance but he is still rounding out his game and the Plumlees are still finding their way.  But there is hope for even more improvement and Krzyzewski recently said he liked where the Plumlees were at this point in the season.

Miles Plumlee started slow, but he is now getting where he fits in and that's a good sign.  His brother Mason has become a rebounding and shot blocking machine and he simply needs to keep that up.  However, Mason can break out at any time on offense where he is adjusting to the slower pace rendered by Irving's absence.  In fact, both the Plumlees's are capable of turning another corner as the season goes on.

During the many pre season interviews with Mike Krzyzewski, he stated this team would be a work in progress and that he did not want them to gel too early.  There is a lot of wisdom in that statement for it is clear a team must get hot for six to eight games to take home the big prize.  And his comment rings especially true with Irving's absence.

That said, it's time to relish and enjoy each and every game during the stretch run for there are a lot of questions which need to be answered.  Will Irving come back and if so what kind of game will he display?  Are two sensational seniors in Singler and Smith enough to put a team on their backs should Irving not return?  Can Curry start knocking down his shots which he drills in practice?  Can the Plumlees step up and will Ryan Kelly continue his play of late?

Maybe we'll see Andre Dawkins game swell, but who really knows?  And that is not all to watch out for.  Will Duke get the coveted number one seed where they'll play in New Jersey, Charlotte and Houston should they make a run?

With a bevy of Big East teams adorning the Top 25 a number one seed in the east is no longer as clear as it once seemed, so that means, Duke has to win it's share of games against conference foes while taking their best shots.  It's no secret that defeating Duke is a resume builder for the NCAA's and there are a lot of balanced conference teams looking for a signiture win.

Again, there is nothing more exciting than the stretch run into the tournament, so now is the time to beam in and savor each game for it will pass you by if you don't.  It all starts with an upstart Boston College team this Thursday night and this weekend Duke faces a dangerous trap of a game versus St John's in New York.  And for those of you who are unaware, the game with the  North Carolina Tar Heels is now just tens days off.

By the end of the journey, fans will find out if Krzyzewski found the right buttons to push along the way.  But it'll be up to some young players to step up their game as well.  Let the games begin.

Alex Murphy – “The visit to Duke went great!”

The Duke Blue Devils may be in the midst of their basketball season but recruiting never ends and there has been a lot going on around the program of late.  Several  key recruits are in the process of or have already made the journey to Cameron Indoor Stadium to see the Blue Devils in person.  This weekend Duke entertains Shabazz Muhammad and Austin Rivers and that list may not be done just yet.

Last weekend Duke entertained young but talented 2013 prospect Jabari Parker and key target Alex Murphy.  BDN Premium caught up to Murphy before his game this afternoon at Middlesex and got his thoughts on his visit to Cameron and Duke.  Murphy not only has a game tonight but tomorrow as well and then they turn around and play in the Hoop Hall Classic on Sunday in another event BDN Premium will cover live.

The one word which best describes Murphy's visit to Duke is great as you can see.  "Oh, the visit went great.  It was a great weekend down there.  I got there on Saturday night and stayed until Sunday, got to see the game" said Murphy.

Alex had taken some time off with his [private] Father to check out the Blue Devils win over Maryland in an ACC battle.  While he was originally supposed to stay a bit longer and wanted to, inclement weather force them to leave earlier than expected.  "Due to some weather conflicts we had to head out early Monday morning, but like I said the visit was great and while I got to see a little bit of campus during the Tournament of Champions, this time I got to see a game as well," said the St. Mark's marksmen.

Murphy has some familiarity with Duke in that they've zeroed in on the star as a priority need.  When asked if he knew any of the current players Murphy responded, "I know Nolan Smith real well, having met him at the Adidas Nations Camp in Chicago this summer.  And then I got to spend some time with the guys this weekend like Kyrie.  Of course, he is hurt but I did  get to spend some time with him which was cool."

While Murphy may not know a lot of the current players he is getting to know some of the players in Duke's incoming class.  "I know some of the guys coming in next year.  The one I know the most is Quinn Cook and then a couple of other guys too.  I know Marshall Plumlee real well and Austin Rivers too."

Muprhy elaborated more by saying,  "I think it helps when other players going into a program recruit because they already have a feel for the school and the coaches they'll play for.  Just knowing them before you get down there helps.  It's like having a sense of familiarity with them before you get down there.  Of course, Nolan will not be there when I would but getting to know some of the guys I could be teammates with is definitely important."

While his visit was a bit shorter than he wanted, Murphy was still able to get a look around.  "I saw a lot of the stuff that surrounds the game and of course the game itself.  I didn't tour campus or see dorms unfortunately and if the time was there I would have probably stayed on Monday and met with the academic advisers down there.  But for the most part I got to see a lot of basketball related things around campus.  It was really good," stated Murphy.

When asked of his reaction to the Cameron Crazies chanting his name, Murphy said, "In the pre game I was standing right under the basket with Kyrie Irving and the guys behind me were chanting come to Duke and as soon as the game was over, they continued to show love.  I kind of kept my head down but when they cheered my name I looked up and it was kind of cool."

As for his future plans pertaining to Duke and other schools, Alex said, "Yeah, I will return.  Right now I have no set plans for getting back down there or any other school but I will definitely take my chances and go to some other schools but I will be back there at some point and time."

Recap - We kept the conversation brief and to the point in that Andre Slater will cover Murphy during the Hoop Hall this weekend.  Murphy was kind enough to give BDN his initial thoughts on the visit despite his upcoming game.  He seemed genuinely happy with how the visit went and it is no secret Duke is one of, if not the leader for his services. This was of course and unofficial visit in that he is just a junior.  It's getting hot around BDN Premium, so stay tuned for more information coming your way in droves over the next several days.[/private]

Nolan Smith drops 33 as Duke rolls past UAB 85-64

DURHAM - The nation's top ranked team, the Duke Blue Devils, remained undefeated, defeating Alabama Birmingham 85-64 on a night which featured Nolan Smith's career high scoring effort.  Smith dropped 33 points on a variety of moves and continues torrid play of late.

Smith's effort overshadowed fellow senior Kyle Singler who went over the 2000 point mark for his career at Duke.  Singler finished the game with 15 points to go with his 7 rebounds.  Smith added a team high 5 assists and, like his senior teammate, grabbed 7 rebounds.

"He's playing great right now.  He's just unstoppable, really.  He has high energy and is getting to the cup, he's really tough to guard," said Kyle Singler on Smith's effort.

Alabama-Birmingham scored the first three points of the game and then Duke went on a 16-0 run and they never looked back.  The Duke defense stifled the visitors early and, while they warmed up with their shooting as the game went along, Duke never came close to trailing again.

"I thought we were ready to play.  We go up 26-3, whatever it was and you knew you couldn't keep that up.  I was proud of my team," said Krzyzewski.

Duke also got a great game out of Mason Plumlee, who Krzyzewski said had his best game of the season.  Plumlee finished the game with 14 points and a team high 9 rebounds.

"That was Mason's best game at Duke.  He was talking, and he played with presence, getting 14 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks," said Krzyzewski on his sophomore centers 'play.

Overall, Duke looked more than ready to play tonight and this game served as a good tune-up before Maryland comes in this Sunday.  And remember, the Terp's were the last team to defeat the Blue Devils.

With the win, the Blue Devils move to to 14-0 on the season while UAB drops to 10-3.  Duke next faces Maryland at 8:00 on Sunday.

BDN Sidebar - Sophomore Andre Dawkins earned his third career start. It is the third time he has started in the last six games.

Senior Kyle Singler moved into a tie for ninth on Duke's career starts list with Danny Ferry. Singler drew his 124th career start.

Senior guard Nolan Smith scored eight of Duke's first 11 points in the game with a layup and two three-point field goals.

After UAB opened the game with a three-point field goal, Duke has gone on a 16-0 run over the next 4:02 minutes. It was the Blue Devils' longest run of the season. The previous long was 14 points against Elon.

Seniors Singler and Smith each reached double figures in scoring in the first eight minutes of the contest. The two captains are tied for the team lead with 13 games of 10 or more points this season.

Duke made five of its first six three-point field goal attempts. Singler and Smith each had two treys while Dawkins

DURHAM - One of the players who is expected to pick up their game in the absence of Kyrie Irving is Andre Dawkins.  The sophomore got some major minutes against Elon and had a nice overall game.  BDN caught up to Dawkins for a one on one interview where he shared his thoughts on the coming ACC battles and more ...
