Savon Goodman – “Duke will start recruiting me hard”

Savon Goodman update from BDN Premium - BDN Photo

The 2012 class is full of wing prospects and one of them is Pennsylvania native, Savon Goodman. Savon is one of the most athletically gifted players in the class, with leaping ability that makes you say, "Wow." Not only does he have the vertical, but his strength is quite an asset to his game at this stage. With a host of local schools showing tremendous interest in the prospect, he also boasts a lot of interest from out of state schools. BDN got a chance to get a quick update with the prospect and here is what he had to say.

So school just started for you, how is that going for you?

School flow is going good! Getting things back in order academically, and besides that everything else is well.

When do [private] your official practices start for school?

Official practice doesn’t start until about November, but we’ve been working out with just the team. They’re optional workouts. So everyone just comes to those. Just trying to get the chemistry and stuff together as a team.

I understand you guys were supposed to have an open gym a couple of days ago, how did that go?

Yes, and someone was up from Duke.

Who was there from Duke?

Nate James.

Did you get a chance to talk to him at all?

Yes, we just said cordial hello's in passing.

Can you talk about that at all?

Well, in the past he said that he’s going to let Coach K know about me, and they’re going to start recruiting me hard. Just things like that, they like the way I play.

Was this your first time you’ve seen Coach Nate James or any of the Duke coaches?

No I’ve seen them a couple of times around the summer but I didn’t notice who he was, so he came up to our school. I just knew he was a representative of Duke.

Could you rhyme off a list of schools that have interest in you?

Offers are Villanova, Virginia Tech, Texas, Penn State, Temple, LaSalle, Miami, Xavier, Wake Forest, Oregon State, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech.

You’ve got a great list there. You work out with Lamont Peterson is that correct?

Yes, I do.

Could you talk a little bit about that and the relationship with him?

It’s a long relationship that we’ve had. He’s like a mentor in my life. We workout from time to time and he tells me what I need to work on, and I work on it and get better and we move onto the next thing.

Will he be a factor in your decision?

Yea, he will, I listen to his word.

Now, being a 2012 kid, is it too early to make a decision?

I figure when me, my mother, my trainer and my high school coach sit down we’ll probably have a list at the beginning of my senior season.

Alright, Savon, I appreciate your time and I hope you have a great year in school. Good luck.

Thank you. [/private]

Prospect Update – Amile Jefferson to attend Countdown to Craziness

BDN Premium has the latest from Amile Jefferson - Photo property of BDN Photo

One of the top players out of the state of Pennsylvania, Amile Jefferson has many schools trying to gain his services. The forward had a great summer AAU season in which he impressed almost everyone who came out to watch him.  During the AAU season, Amile also played alongside Duke recruit Savon Goodman. The two have built quite the chemistry playing together.  BDN got a chance to speak with Amile and discuss his summer, recruiting as well as his interest in Duke.

First off  could I get your current height and weight?

Sure, I’m about 6’8, 185-190lbs.

You had a busy AAU season.  Can you tell us how your summer went?

I think my summer went well. I played on a really good team this summer, Team Philly.  We did very well I thought.  We played great as a unit and we played up and did a lot of damage and we won a lot. We went out to Vegas and we won that and I thought it was big, how we played as a team. I thought I did well leading our team and being the leader, keeping the guys [private] on and playing hard.

Did you enjoy your time in Vegas?

Oh yeah, definitely.  It’s a little hot at times but I enjoyed it!

Definitely some big time heat. Earlier this summer you played at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions.  Did you get a chance to check out any of the schools or their facilities?

We actually played in Cameron, and you know that was about it.  I didn’t check out either of the schools down there.

Can you give a current list of schools that are recruiting you right now?

Sure. Villanova, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Florida State, Georgetown, Duke, Stanford, most of the Philly schools have been in contact a lot.

Do you have any sort of timetable for making a decision?

I’m not sure as of right now.  As of now I haven’t been on one unofficial visit outside of Philadelphia. I’ve talked to coaches starting in June when they could call, but as of right now I have no idea where I want to be.

So you had an open gym yesterday I believe? Is that correct?

Yeah, we were supposed to, I believe, but we didn’t.  Yesterday was actually my first day of school, and we didn’t.  But assistant coach Nate James did stop by and I did get a chance to see him briefly, but we didn’t have the open gym.

Have you spoken with any of the Duke coaches?

Well I went to Duke's camp back in freshman year, so I got to talk with most of them there.  And James has called me as well.

Now when you eventually do make your college decision, who will you look to to help with that decision?

I’ll definitely look to my family.  Especially my father, he’s been on the AAU circuit with me since the beginning. Everywhere I’ve been, he’s been. Definitely my head AAU coach, he’s given me a lot of advice and I’ve been playing with him since I’ve been about 10, so I definitely will look to those two. Lonnie Lowry, he runs our AAU squad basically, so I’ll look to him.

Just one last question now, do you have any visits planned for the upcoming college basketball season?

I’m hoping to get to a lot of stuff this fall.  I’m hoping to get to Duke.  Countdown to Craziness I believe it is?

Yeah, that’s what it’s called.

Yeah, I’m hoping to get down there to start to get a feel of schools so I can start to think of where I want to be.  So, hopefully this fall will be a busy one, and hopefully I’ll be able to get out and see some schools.

Alright, thanks a lot Amile, appreciate your time.

Yeah, no problem.

Watzone's take - Duke is still following the progress of Jefferson who brings some very attractive skills to the table and is a solid character kid.  The hold up could be his size where he needs to put on some muscle and show interest or take to the weight room.[/private]

Monday Musings – Another Gold for Coach K, Recruiting, Duke-Bama, need 2 tickets!

Back by popular demand is a shot from cheerleaders past! Okay, we cannot access our latest pics so this weeks Monday Musings cheerleader of the week is from the past.

It's Monday morning and that means more musings from BDN and we start it off talking of Coach K and his added wears.  We then go into basketball recruiting and end of course with a game which is rocking the headlines, that being the #1 team in the nation, Alabama visiting Duke.

No lickings but he sure keeps ticking

What could Mike Krzyzewski possibly do after coming off a gold medal in the Olympics and winning a national championship with Duke just months ago?  That's simple for him.  He goes out and restores USA atop the FIBA rankings and returns the Naismith Trophy to the United States.  Watching Duke, er, Team USA defeat Turkey in their backyard yesterday, it was easy to see why I mistakenly thought I was watching the Blue Devils.  Team USA used some lock down defense and their quickness to squelch any hopes of  a comeback from Turkey once they built an early lead they never relinquished.  The end result is more confetti atop the heads of the HOF Coach and his sidekick Robin, otherwise known as Duke Assistant Coach Chris Collins.  I found that many Duke faithful felt they were pulling for their beloved home team when watching the games, hanging on every made basket or turnover.  Meanwhile, back in Durham, construction began at the Krzyzewski home where an extra room was being added to house all of his trophies and wears.  Yes, I am kidding.  I do wonder where he puts all of those awards though.

Another shot in the arm for recruiting

So here is Coach K without a single player from the Olympic team, referred to by the media as the "B" team but my thinking is that Coach will have none of that chatter.  Krzyzewski has proved time and time again that he adjusts to his teams strength and weaknesses and in the process he made Kevin Durrant a household name.  His team bought into the defensive philosophy that it takes to win in International Basketball and each players, despite being the man for their NBA teams bought into the scheme which is a testament to his communication skills.  Any prospective Blue Devil could not help but be impressed with how the NBA guys took to Krzyzewski and his staff and you can bet that this was another shot in the arm to recruiting.  Add that to the style his 2010-11 team will play and you can bet that some good names will start to show up soon.

BDN Premium has the latest on several prospects

In our latest offering on BDN Premium our all access  extended service subscription site, we take you inside the recruiting front.  Our first offering of the week is an update with prospect Tony Parker, a load of talent in the paint.  Parker talks to BDN's west coast correspondent Varand K, yes we have our K around here too, about the recruiting process.  As you can see by the headlines, Parker has confirmed he will attend Countdown to Craziness and he chats of Nate James recent visit as well.   It is truly a good time to join and learn of what is going on on the recruiting trail which will soon be red hot.  Heck, it already is inside!  Join and come on in and talk about the latest happenings with other members.

Alabama is a cure of sorts

Alabama is a temporary cure for the Duke Football team after their defense struggled to contain Wake Forest  in a 54-48 shootout this past Saturday.  In yesterday's call in show, Duke-Bama hype dominated the Q and A session enabling Coach, the team and fans to put the Wake game behind them.  Of course, once the ball is kicked off in one of the biggest games in Wallace Wade history, Duke will be in the fire of fires facing the nations top team, a juggernaut, if you will.

Circus Atmosphere in store for Bama at Duke

The weather reports are stating that high tides are expected in Durham this week.  That would be a high Crimson Tide.  It'll be nuts around Durham leading into the game against Alabama.  As early as Thursday, you will see Crimson red all over the place in the local communities.  I mean, they have installed temporary bleachers for the game and the media doubled during yesterdays call in show.  RVs will be parked at the old South Square Mall and Bama fans will then be shuttled into the stadium.  And let me go ahead and warn you, this will seem like an Alabama home game north for they will wear their colors and cheer in unison in a way which might teach some of the locals how to root for their football team.  Do you think Duke concessions will be ready for the onslaught?  I am giving them a heads up.

Tickets anyone?

As of this morning I have had nine people ask me if I could help them get a pair of tickets to the game.  Folks, this ain't no Duke-Elon game!  Bama faithful bought an ridiculous amount of season tickets for this game. Yes, season tickets.  If you see a few scalpers driving new cars the following week it will dawn on you how much money will exchanges hands making those verminous scalpers a lot of money.  The question is will Duke fans sell out for the moola?  If you do, you will not experience a game they will talk about for years to come.

My phone is ringing

It started yesterday morning and by dawn of Monday, five people called me to ask if I saw the opening line.  "It's just  23.5 exclaimed each person," as if they were trying to get my okay to lay their hard earned money on the visiting Crimson Tide.  I must say that I was a bit surprised by the line myself, but maybe ... aw heck, I don't know because I don't gamble.  One of them said I would take a 24-0 loss right now.  Let's not be that defeatist no matter how foreboding the game looks.

And that ends another addition of Watzones' Monday Musings.

Duke Prospect Tony Parker Set To Attend Countdown to Craziness

BDN Premium updates the latest on prospect Tony Parker who will attend Countdown to Craziness - BND Photo, A. Slater

Already lined up with an impressive list of attendees, Duke’s Countdown to Craziness can add another to the mix. 2012 big man, Tony Parker, from Miller Grove High School in Georgia says he will be in attendance for the event and raising of Duke's fourth National Championship. While he has the look of an NFL lineman, Tony is very quick on his feet and can run the open court. BDN Premium caught up with Tony and chatted a bit after Duke Assistant Coach Nate James recent visit.

I hope all is well with you Tony.  So how do you think you did this summer on the circuit?

I'm doing well.  I did ok I think.  I think I finished up strong. I don’t think I did too well in June. I mean, in the beginning stretches of AAU I didn’t do well, but I think I finished up strong in the final stretch and played [private] pretty well.

Now you spend a lot of time on the road with these guys. Do you enjoy it, or does it get bothersome?

Yeah, I mean, at a point you get use to it. I’ve been playing AAU for a long time so it doesn’t really bother you anymore.

Sure, sure. Could we get a quick update on your height and weight please?

I’m 6’9" - 278lbs.

You’re a big dude. Have you ever thought about football, or has basketball always been it?

(laughs) Nah, basketball has always been my first passion.

As far as training goes, is there anything you’ve worked on over the summer?

Basically everything. I’m trying to get stronger and faster. Working on agility, putting on pounds of muscle. Just everything basically.

That’s great to hear. Did you recently have an open gym or a workout at your school?

Yes I recently had a workout on September 9th.

Could you talk about any of the schools or coaches that were in attendance?

Yeah, it was Florida, Florida St., Auburn, Georgia Tech, Duke. It was basically a lot of ACC schools. I believe there was about nine of them there, but I don’t remember all of them.

So you said Duke was in attendance.

Yes it was Nate James, yes sir.

Could you touch on that?

Yeah, we talk on the phone. I’ve talked to Nate James a lot of times. I should be going up there October 15th.

Right, for the Countdown to Craziness?

Yeah, for that. I think that should be pretty fun.

Now do you have a list of schools yet?

I have schools, but I wouldn’t really say it’s a list.

Right, right. Could you name them?

Florida, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Georgetown, Duke, Louisville, UConn, Oklahoma. I think that’s about it.

That’s a nice list there. Do you have any sort of timeframe to decide or will it just be whenever?

Yeah, probably whenever.

Alright -  appreciate your time, Tony.

Thank you. [/private]

“Worthy Champions” — Commemorative Book Available Now

DURHAM - Hardly a single day has gone by when I haven't thought about how lucky I was to have followed Duke all the way to Indianapolis where they, of course, won the 2010 national championship.  It was a magical season and, for me, it was almost surreal seeing the whole scene up close and personal.  David Bradley runs Duke Blue Planet, the team's official website, and he was there every step of the way alongside me with one exception.  As great as my access was, Dave's was better, for he was truly on the inside.  Every time I turned around Bradley was documenting every team move, coaches and all.  This allowed him to produce a new book commemorating the championship, called "Worthy Champions."  The Sports Illustrated Special Edition was pretty cool but other offerings were not that impressive, which led me to wonder why someone didn't put out a really good edition, full of illustrations, from, again, a truly magical season.  As it turns out, Bradley had been working on doing just that. The end product is a success and a must for Duke fans of all ages.  Want to relive that championship run?  Then check out this book and read on as BDN chatted with Bradley about the finished product and where you can purchase a copy.

Give a general background on how the project got started?

Basically I was working on the next issue of Blue Planet magazine and realized the 2010 team was too good of a story to do just one issue.  I had so many photos and content from the tourney run and throughout the year.  Obviously Sports Illustrated and a few other media outlets put something out there, but I wanted to do something that really captured the essence of the 2010 team and their unique journey.  I banged out the 212 pages and showed our internal staff here.  They were on board and I got some great feedback from Coach and Mrs. K and we went from there.

Can you talk about the layout and what readers can expect from the book?

It has a different feel than a traditional book because I wanted to take advantage of the access and relationships I have, and I knew that people would be more interested in hearing the story from the players and coaches as opposed to just me.  I was lucky that everyone I asked to help and contribute was more than willing.  As a result, the book has contributions and articles from the entire starting five, Coach Collins, Coach Wojo, Jay Bilas, Chris Carrawell, Jamie Spatola, Debbie Savarino, Eric Skeffington (our senior manager), Zach White (diehard Cameron Crazie), and even the Blue Devil.  So the story of the 2010 team is told by individuals who lived it, loved it and were excited to share their memories and thoughts.

Yeah – I saw that Kyle Singler had some art in there too...

For the book, Kyle designed the inside cover, a Crazies graphic, an ACC champs graphic, and wrote the foreword.  The 17-0 logo he made on Senior Night is also in there.  Kyle really has a creative mind and enjoys playing around on Photoshop even when it’s not for a class project.  It’s pretty cool to see him merge his passion for basketball and art in a publication dedicated to a season that Duke fans will never forget.  And, obviously, I really appreciate his skills and willingness to contribute.

What’s the story behind the title?

Coach K talks often about being a deserving winner and paying the price to become a worthy champion.  That means competing every day, representing Duke at the highest level and taking pride in the name on the front of the jersey.  I am not sure people realize just how much these guys went through, especially our veterans, behind the scenes working extraordinarily hard.  When April 5th, 2010 rolled around, our team was absolutely deserving of what happened next.  They were “worthy champions” without a doubt.

This is an extensive book — how long did it take to put everything together?

Well, I started about a week after we won the whole thing and I finished in mid-August.  In that time period, I worked on it every day and there were some late nights involved in addition to some text messages from my mom suggesting I sleep more.  However, the team was such a joy to be around from the jump and I had a blast reliving the year on a daily basis.  Our players and coaches invested so much and the team gave Duke everything they had, bringing so much positive emotion to our entire community and fans all over the world.  Hopefully the book reflects that, and our fans will be proud to leave it on their coffee tables for awhile.

Where can fans find this book?

It’s for sale exclusively by Duke Stores online and at the Duke Bookstore.

You can buy it here: Worth Champions at Duke Stores Online

Duke Basketball Team and Recruiting Update – Hot News on Visits

Duke will paying a few visits tomorrow and beyond and BDN Premium breaks it down for you in our latest team and recruiting update - Photo property of Blue Devil Nation

Coach Mike Krzyzewski and his assistant Chris Collins are going for Gold in Istanbul, Turkey but that doesn't mean Duke still isn't recruiting.   The Blue Devils will hit the road running with in-home visits when the coaches get back but there are already other developments taking place and BDN Premium let's you in on the latest with our Duke team and recruiting update.

BDN's own Andrew Slater has a new interview just up with 2012 prospect Savon Goodman and we've learned that [private] Duke Assistant Coach Nate James will pay a visit to Goodman tomorrow.  Of course, this means he will also take in Amile Jefferson.

Goodman is the kind of athlete Duke would like to add, so they will continue to evaluate and follow him.  Jefferson has long been on the radar as well and the Blue Devils like his teamwork ethic and his upside.  Jefferson continues to get better as time goes on and his rating will likely rise in the coming months.

James will also visit big Tony Parker to catch a workout and the Blue Devils have been following the big guys game.  Parker is a solid middle guy in the mold of past Duke players who've had success in the middle.

The road trip will continue as James will visit Houston guard L.J. Rose on Friday.  Rose, who has told BDN he likes Duke, is at the top of his class and the PG prospect is firmly on the Blue Devils watch list.

A name we spoke of, actually didn't is Rasheed Salaimon.  He was the name we hinted at but it got out before we could touch base with him.  This kid threw major signals Duke's way in an effort to get them to take a look and he will receive their attention.

Meanwhile, everything is stable in the Austin Rivers recruitment and as we have mentioned he will visit Duke and UNC this month.  I have a questions for members.  Where is Coach K right now?  That's right in that he is overseas.  Now, has anything significant happened in the Rivers camp of late?  Watch what happens in the coming three months or less for they will be telling.

You know Kyle Singler had surgery and I am happy to say that it looks as if it was successful and that he is on track to return by the start of basketball practice if not sooner.

What you may not know is that Mason and Miles Plumlee suffered ankle sprains while in Chicago so they have been taking it real slow while other players continue to workout in preparation for the season.

And Kyrie Irving?  Let's just say he is turning a few heads with his abilities and that all the Blue Devils are working really hard in an effort to make another national championship run.

Lots of in home visits will be set up in the near future and we'll keep you informed after a slow period for hoops recruiting.  We'll also let you know who to expect for sure in Cameron for Countdown to Craziness.

Until the next update, this is Mark Watson saying thank you for being a member of Blue Devil Nation Premium. [/private]
