Duke is Set to Take on ACC Schedule

After a long break, the Duke men's basketball team returns to the court this Saturday evening to take on Clemson in both teams ACC opener.  Duke will do so ranked as the number one team in America after going 11-1 during the non-conference portion of the schedule.

During the seasons opening stretch, the Blue Devils won a memorable game over Kentucky in dominant fashion in.  They would be humbled against Gonzaga but also gathered wins over solid teams in Auburn, Indiana and Texas Tech.

The Blue Devils have also become must-see basketball where they dominate the likes of the ESPN airwaves with the teams' exploits.  While R.J. Barrett is the teams alpha player, it is Zion Williamson that has set the world on fire.

Williamson has made it clear that no analysts can properly describe his game to date,  The young phenoms game is more than powerful dunks.  He has shown an uncanny potential to flourish in any on the court situation and his every move is watched.

Duke has also developed quite nicely around their two high scoring stars.  Tre Jones has run the point guard position effectively and his defense often starts the machine and its roll.

Cam Reddish has struggled at times, but his potential points to more consistent play and aggressiveness during ACC play.  But when the four freshmen play together, they are at times unbeatable.

In the preseason, most analysts felt Javin DeLaurier and Marques Bolden would share the fifth starting spot.  Both of these players have shown flashes of solid play.  An injury set DeLaurier back a bit and Bolden has had some moments.

The most surprising contributor to date has been Jack White.  In fact, he is currently the fifth man due to his ability to fit in seamlessly.  White is flourishing in his captain's role on and off the court.

Duke has also been able to develop more depth in the way of Alex O'Connell.  A timely three-pointer here and there but more importantly being better on defense has made him an option.

The team will now face the gauntlet known as the ACC schedule.  And the league is good.  Florida State, North Carolina, N.C. State, Virginia, Virginia Tech are all off to solid starts and each is ranked.

The Duke staff will now have to prepare the team in a short time between games until the NCAA Tournament ends.

By all accounts, the time off has been beneficial for the players before the ACC slate,  It is the last time they can really catch their breath and reflect on how things have gone to date.   Those lessons learned can help prepare them for the stretch run.

From this point forward, the games and lessons come quickly.  In a sense, Duke is ahead of the curve with concern to chemistry,  This seasons teams core was set early on and there is little to no controversy to date.

It will be important for the collective team to learn in the coming battles, who takes shots and when in close contests.   When it is time to leak out into the passing lanes instead of leaving others open and so and much more.  Those are the lessons which will help guide them to their goal of getting to the Final Four.

One thing we know for certain.  That being that the hype will not go away.  During ACC play, Duke will have to learn to deal with expectations and how hard it is to bring your A game every night.  In short, they will get every teams best shot.

While this team has yet to achieve anything in the way of championships, they surely have the potential to be special.  This team has the air of those special teams past but it will take continued work and some luck for the ultimate success.

It will surely be fun for the Duke fan base to watch as the season unfolds with what has become one of the more likable teams in memory.  And that is saying a lot for Duke fans love all their teams.

Strap yourself in for what is now the greatest show in college basketball.  But there will be some bumps along the way and how the team deals with them will ultimately decide if they become truly special in the way of title memories.

David Cutcliffe Bye Week Q & A

COACH CUTCLIFFE: This open date has obviously come at a good time for us with the number of injuries that we've had to starters. We still, right now, have six out that will return.

We've got both Mark Gilbert out for the season and Marvin Hubbard. But it's come at a good time. And also obviously at a tough time, when you get beat and you go into an open date, sometimes the reaction that you have can be panic. And this team's not that way. I think this team understands it's got to play well to win but it knows how to go about its business.

And we've practiced really well to this point. We'll practice again tomorrow and give them the weekend off and then start preparation for Georgia Tech Sunday evening.

Q. Ricky Walker didn't pop off the stat sheet Saturday night. But you made a point to praise him in your postgame remarks. What makes him so difficult to block?
COACH CUTCLIFFE: Well, he's obviously -- he's really strong. He's big. Not necessarily tall. But you know he's just a big upper-bodied guy that has extreme quickness. He has great hands. So he's a penetrator. He's what I call a disrupter.

Anybody that can penetrate your line of scrimmage as much as he's done against us, he certainly has given us many problems. I think there's no question he's an all-conference performer and I voted him that way every year.

Q. I know it's early in the conference season. Do you suspect that the parity this year is just as strong or maybe even stronger considering the rise of Syracuse and BC and your team, too?
COACH CUTCLIFFE: Yeah, I think in 11 seasons that I've been in the league, that this is as balanced as it's been, but it's been coming this way, and more and more so.

There's not a game anybody's going to play that you're going to ignore anybody; that you can ignore as a game you already got it in the left-hand column. You've got to play well. And you're going to have to play hard for 60 minutes.

And we didn't play well Saturday. And Virginia Tech did. People kind of looking at what happened. We got beat. That literally was the fact of the matter that they just played better than we played. And I thought we had prepared well. And when this parity in this league -- I told our team, welcome to the next seven games you're going to play. Every ACC game is going to be the same. It's going to require that you play as well as you can possibly play.

Q. I know after the game you talked about the frustration of not being able to run the ball as consistently as you had last week. When you look back at the tape, was that something that they did, something that you did, and how much of an emphasis have you placed on trying to get back to more consistency in the run game during the bye-week practices?
COACH CUTCLIFFE: I think probably the most (lost audio) there was a lot of eight-man coverage that they were playing. We couldn't run the ball. There were various reasons. Everybody takes credit, but it starts with me. You gotta schematically do things right. And that's my responsibility and we didn't do that as well as we should.

Then you have to physically win some battles. And at times we weren't doing that as well as we could. We got really good byes and we're better in the offensive front. But to run the football, what you have to do is be consistent. And that means everybody. That means quarterback making the right decisions, that means the head football coach making sure we're in the best position possible to get it done and then all five linemen at tight end usually somebody involved, also receivers.

I told our team: This open date next week, next week, a lot of that (indiscernible) football is just doing one thing and that's blocking well. And so we've got to continue to grow in that regard as well.

Q. Just reevaluate your team after the first five games, what did you like and what (inaudible) your team?
COACH CUTCLIFFE: We love the resiliency of our team. We love our team speed. It's very evident that we've got a lot of people that can run. We've been consistent for the most part all year long. We're not going to let one game -- we didn't play as well as we could have played in any form at Virginia Tech, but we didn't play awful. They just played extremely well and we didn't play well enough.

I think our team can find a way to be consistent. We've got a lot of weapons on both sides of the ball and we've got outstanding leadership.

THE MODERATOR: Thank you.

5 Questions with Duke Freshman Cam Reddish

Cam Reddish - 5 questions with the Duke freshman

Incoming Duke freshman Cam Reddish spent some time on the Duke campus recently during the Coach K Academy.  Here are five quick questions with the highly rated freshman concerning the upcoming season.

I see you're in a waking boot, what is going on with that?

It's not serious.  It's a stress reaction and I will be ready to go in two weeks.  I will be ready to go when I get here in a few months.

I know you're tight with Tre Jones and that you guys talk a lot.  What have you guys been discussing since getting here?

We talk a lot about the upcoming season and we're all just looking forward that and getting to work.  Meeting the veterans has been really cool.  It's a new experience and we learn a lot for them.

Do you feel like the upcoming Canadian trip will be important for the teams development?

It is real  important.  It will be the first time we play together as a team and we hope to go up there and dominate while preparing for the season.  I think it will be fun and it is R.J. (Barrett's) hometown, so we'll get to see that and what it is like there.  I am looking forward to it.

What has it been like to meet the guys on the team and how do you think the chemistry will go heading into the season?

Everybody here is pretty unselfish.  All the freshman and all the returning players are just trying to win this season.  Everybody here prepares well and are really hard workers.

What are your thoughts on Coach K?

I looked up to him growing up and then I got to meet him and now I will get to play for him, so it is like a dream coming true.
