Duke fights through the funk and gets a key win

Anybody who has watched a lot of basketball will tell you teams play in cycles.  Sometimes a made shot, key steal or more importantly a win will get you back on track.

Well, Duke hopes today's hard fought victory over a game Miami team will pull them out of a funk.  It certainly looked as if the Blue Devils were on their way to a second straight loss after one of the worst half's of offensive basketball I have seen them play.

Coming off the Clemson debacle, fans hoped to see a well oiled machine, but it became evident that Duke was in a mental funk and by intermission even the most positive fans were wondering if Duke could find any way to score.

While the first half was seriously ugly, the end result was beautiful for Duke.  Wise men will tell you that win you win a game like this, you let the first half go.  In fact, Duke should let the Clemson game as well.

Ironically, it was the much maligned Greg Paulus who was a key catalyst.  He made some mistakes but he played through them and continued to hustle forcing many miscues you don't get credit for in the stat sheet.

Paulus three pointers and 18 points were especially vital considering sophomore Nolan Smith has all of a sudden got the look of a deer in headlights about him when on the court.

Singler struggled mightily from the outside and took a few rushed shots, but his toughness on the boards was vital as well.  The super soph hit just 5 of his 23 shots, but he had the presence of mind to keep shooting and that is what was needed.

Like Paulus, senior Dave McClure reached deep down to help his fellow Devils.  McCluers defense was stellar and his game high 14 rebounds were incredible for many of them were created by pure desire.  One needs to not that half of them were on the offensive boards.

And then there is Gerald Henderson.  After a single point before the half, he asserted himself to score 19 points and many of those were in one key stretch run.

The bottom line is if you look at individual stats and the Duke shooting percentage, you would think they lost.  But they didn't and much of that can be attributed to half time adjustments where Coach K tinkered with his defense.

During the second half, Krzyzewski made another good move, calling a timeout after his team hit a stretch where they missed five shot in a row, all beyond the stripe.  He obviously told them to attack more and when they did it payed off.

You can certainly point to a lot of areas Duke needs work on, be it attacking a zone defense or getting players other than the big three to step up.  Actually, two did step up today and they were both seniors.  Duke could not have won this game without their spirited play.

In the end, there was one key thing which happened today and that was Duke got the win.  The way they had to fight back to take that win is something which cannot be measured with concerns to confidence.

Duke is now realizing how hard teams will come at them and they are seeing defenses designed to give them trouble.  Despite how bad some feel Duke is playing, they are tied atop the conference at 7-2 and won their 20th game of the season against three losses.

You see, it's better to struggle or see those defenses now for those are the kind of lessons that prepare you for March.  Duke will now prepare for rival North Carolina.  The two teams will battle for sole possession of first place in the ACC and you can be sure that the lessons learned by Duke will benefit them in this game.

Blue Devils use tough defense to rout Cavaliers

geraldDuke used an early 27-7 run to build a 22 point halftime lead and coast to a 79-54 win over the Virginia Cavaliers. Gerald Henderson and Nolan Smith led the Blue Devils with 18 and 15 points respectively. Jon Scheyer contributed 11 points and was the team's leading rebounder with seven.

Duke utilized tough defense to fuel its offense turning Virginia over 23 times including 17 turnovers in the first half. Duke scored 29 points off of turnovers, while Virginia only managed two points off of nine turnovers. Throughout the game, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski urged the Blue Devils to stay in passing lanes and push the ball off turnovers and rebounds.

Gerald Henderson made a 3-point bucket to start the game and Duke never relinquished the lead. Sylven Landesberg led Virginia with 20 points.

This was an important win for Duke as they were coming off a disappointing loss to Wake Forest on Wednesday. Next up for Duke is a trip to Littlejohn Coliseum to face the Clemson Tigers.

Random thoughts on the Blue Devils 85-44 win over Maryland

It's hard to find a starting point in talking about how dominant the Blue Devils 85-44 win over Maryland was today.  I mean the Devils defense held Maryland to four points over the last ten

Nolan Smith takes it to the rim versus the Terps
Nolan Smith takes it to the rim versus the Terps

minutes of the first half and limited the visitor to 27% shooting on the day and their lowest point total in forty years.  Here are some random thoughts -

Duke hit their three point shots- The Blue Devils shot better from the three point stripe than they did the field where they finished 12 of 25.  If Duke can continue this kind of production, they'll be tough to beat come March.  An interesting side not is that all of Scheyer's (4 of 13) made field goals were three pointers.

Gerald Henderson - "G" is starting to dominate the game as he finds his comfort level.  I mean 17 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals in 23 minutes of play is ridiculous!

The Duke defense-  I don't want to jinx these Blue Devils, but could this be the best defensive team Krzyzewski has ever had?  While Maryland was ice cold, Duke still created 17 turnovers, held them to 28.2% from the field and a high school

point total of 44.  A 12-2 advantage on points off turnovers help too.  We may get a more definitive answer after this coming Wednesday's road game at Wake Forest.

Good Match up- This year's Maryland team doesn't have the intimidating front court players as they have in years past.  Duke matches up very well with the Terps, as witnessed by their 56-38 rebound advantage.

Chemistry coming around- If you have read my recent game stories, you'll see where I pointed out how few assists Duke was getting from the point guard spot.  Well, they woke up today for 85 points on 23 assists is pretty darn good. Duke got 8 assists from their two quarterbacks, Paulus and Smith.

Fun atmosphere in Cameron - It's been a while since the Cameron Crazies, fans and team had as much fan as they did on Saturday.  Everything went right and walloping a team that has been a thorn over the years was sweet.  The cheers were great and well, it was a lot of fun for Duke fans.

Freshman get minutes- Is anybody tired of the message board talk on Elliot Williams or is it just me?  Okay, there will always be some, but Williams showed flashes of coming along.  He tossed in 9

points, many on dunks today and played good defense.  He is gradually getting accustomed to the speed and physical nature of the ACC.  Mile Plumlee had a time getting a shot to drop, in fact he was 0-5, but he did grab 5 rebounds and swatted 3 shots away.  Olek Czyz got some burn as well, playing nine minutes.

Is Duke #1?- While UConn may get some votes, Duke should be tops in the land in both polls come Monday afternoon.  This week will mark the 60th time Duke has been at the top pf the heap in the ESPN/Coaches poll since it's inauguration.  UNC is a distant second.

5-0, 18-1 -The fast start in the ACC is a blessing in that Duke has Wake and UNC coming up twice each and a road trip to Clemson.  Trust me in that at Virginia Tech, Boston College and Maryland are no walks in the park.  The neighboring team has a much more conducive schedule.

Senior leadership - So, have you noticed the selflessness of Duke seniors David McClure and Greg

Paulus?  Well take notice for they have five more games to play in Cameron for their career.

The Duke Community comments on the loss of Kay Yow

The Blue Devil Nation sends the family of Kay Yow and N.C. State community our sincere condolences.  Having lost a sister to breast cancer, I understand the frustration and pain.

Coach McCallie (Coach P) -

On her reaction:
“It was just so mixed. She has been such a warrior in terms of her fight and her struggle, but a part of me is just feeling great for her to be going home to a better place for her now. It’s hard to

describe the feeling; it’s hard to put it into words. I’ve never seen a woman or known a woman to share a story, her story, so eloquently under such incredible conditions. The courage that she showed, a lot of people are afraid. They’re afraid to share their story. Kay was never afraid. I just know that it had to be a very peaceful thing for her. I’ve not known her very long, and I don’t know her extremely personally, but I feel like I know her character, and I think that’s the interesting thing about Kay Yow. You may not know her personally or had lunch perhaps, but the reality is you know her character and you know what she stands for. In our hearts, our thoughts, our prayers go out to North Carolina State and the entire North Carolina State family, that incredibly talented team. It’s much more personal and direct for them. We grieve with them, but we also celebrate with them. There’s a lot to celebrate there.
She transcends the basketball community. She’s been a historic leader in a very difficult circumstance for women’s health and issues. It transcends the game of basketball, and she was able to use the game of basketball in its proper context to make people better, to help people, to communicate. I still can never get over how ‘pink’ took over. The thing I’ll always think about with Kay is how she made pink. She made pink something special. For the longest time, pink was something soft and feminine and suddenly it became this courageous fight that everyone’s been united in, and that was one her many legacies. She made pink more beautiful than pink could ever be.”

Duke Men's Basketball Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski -
On Kay Yow's impact:
"Over the years, I've had a lot of time to interact with her through the V Foundation. The great thing about her is that she had the courage to fight her battle in public, and as a result she not only fought for herself, but for everybody that has cancer, will have cancer, and for the families who are involved. She created an amazing awareness for that fight and set such a good example, especially in this area with Jimmy [Valvano] as a male and for Kay to do that, I don't think any area of the country has brought an awareness to the fight against cancer like this one. God bless her - she was a terrific lady. A fighter 'til the end. ... It's a sad day, but in some respects when you celebrate a life it brings a smile to your face to know you were blessed to be in the presence of an amazing individual."

Former Duke Head Coach and Current Texas Head Coach Gail Goestenkors -

"Today is a sad day for all of women's basketball.  Kay was loved and respected by everyone, and we all feel blessed to have been a small part of her life.  Our game is forever changed because of her.  Kay's impact on the players she had the opportunity to coach and teach, and the impact on her colleagues and friends, cannot be measured.  She touched everyone in such an incredible way that we all felt like we were good friends of Kay's.  I have nothing but love and respect for her.  Her legacy will live on forever in our game."

Former Duke Head Coach Debbie Leonard -

"I knew Kay most of my life.  She was a role model when I was in college, even though she coached our rival, Elon.  She was an opponent as we played summer softball on rival teams.  And of course, when I got to Duke in '77 she once again was an opponent.  Through it all, I respected her so much and our friendship grew.  When I left Duke, one of the first calls I got was from my buddy Kay.  There will never be another who has the ability to be such a competitor in one moment and such an ally in the next.  As I speak these words I know Wuffie is very busy...she's up there forming a "Hoops in Heaven" league !!!"

Former Duke Student-Athlete, Assistant Coach and Current Head Coach at California Joanne Boyle -

"Coach Yow was an inspiration to everyone in all walks of life. She was a incredible role model who had a passion for young people that went above and beyond. Her strong walk with God gave her a purpose and a platform to touch lives in a positive way through a terrible disease. She fought gracefully, bringing awareness, and more importantly, HOPE, to those battling breast cancer.  Coach Yow was a servant to others and a mentor to all.  She gave all she had before leaving this earth and she will forever be remembered in the basketball community!"
