Henderson leads Duke past Florida State 66-58

The second ranked Duke Blue Devils took out a pesky Florida State Seminole team 66-58 to remain undefeated in ACC play.  The two teams felt each other out like prized fighters in the first half, each

counter punching and posturing for the big blow.  In basketball terms that means every dribble, pass and shot was contested and getting an open look is tough when locked up in a clinch.

With the Blue Devils cold on the offensive end, they relied on their defense which held Florida State to 20.6% from the field in the first half.  They went on to take a 19-14 lead to the locker room, thanks to Gerald Henderson who had nine of the Dukies first ten points.

"I was rolling.  We were kid of stagnant and most of my points came of my defense.  When I was able to get out in transition, thats when I was my best," said Henderson of his first nine points.

Coach Krzyzewski was pleased with his teams effort and elated to win which promted him to say, “Well we won a heck of a game today. Florida State was so ready to play us and it was a clean, unbelievably physical game. The action on the boards was phenomenal. I thought we got knocked back with their height, their length, and their tremendous pursuit of the ball. Our defense won the game for us. The last 16 minutes of the first half, we had a hard time scoring against them. Obviously, 19-14, people will say, “Well, it wasn’t a pretty game.” I’ll tell you what, it was a great game. It was a great basketball game. When you have kids competing that hard – it was just tough to get shots off. “

Duke came out to play in the second half warming up on the offensive end and shooting 59% from the field.  The hot shooting allowed them to make a quick 9-0 run which put them up 28-15 which eventually became 27 point lead on a Singler three.

"The start of the second half, we executed a couple of things that got us momentum plays and we did a couple of things that got us turnovers. We got that lead, you almost get that lead too early, although I am happy we got it, don’t get me wrong," stated Krzyzewski.

The Gerald Henderson Show continued as well.  His teammates call him "G," and on this day he was indeed the "G" man scoring a career high 25 points to go with 5 rebounds and 3 steals.  Henderson has been the Blue Devils hottest player and he has now scored in double figures in seven straight contests.

“Henderson was the star for us today. I thought his physicality, his athletic ability to create some shots was huge," said Krzyzewski.

Without Henderson performance, the game could have been lost for the Noles staged a huge comeback cutting to pull withing eight.  But they would get no closer for like a punch drunk boxer their legs were weary as was the Devils.

Krzyzewski commented, "This is our third game in six days and they were fresher than us, and obviously they didn’t give up.”

Kyle Singler chipped in with 15 points, Smith had 12 points and Scheyer added 9 points.

This was the 275th win this decade for the Blue Devils, which is the highest total of any team out there.  This was the 1861st all time win which is the fourth highest total in college basketball.

The Devils will face yet another hostile environment on the road when they travel to Georgia Tech on Wednesday.

High School Hoops Edition #6

schedules. This edition of High School Hoops starts out in our nation's capital with Gonzaga High School and moves around the country with updates on Duke's future players and recruiting targets.

Tyler Thornton has demonstrated an ability to get to the free throw line in recent games. He has taken advantage of the opportunities by connecting on 35 of 43 attempts over his last four games. His 81.4% success rate during these four games is a 11.7% improvement over the 69.7% (23 of 33) he shot during the first nine games. As a point guard who handles the ball for major minutes, it is important for Thornton to punish opposing teams by capitalizing on scoring opportunities from the free throw line.

By comparison, marquee Duke point guards Tommy Amaker, Bobby Hurley, Steve Wojciekowski, and Quinn Snyder had career free throw percentages of 79.1%, 77.6%, 73.2%, and 70% respectively. Comparing a four game streak in high school to career performances at the collegiate level is quite a stretch but the objective is to point out that Thornton is demonstrating a skill set that could pay huge dividends at the next level.

Thornton scored 25, 20, 21, and 13 points in the four games with 44 percent of those points coming via free throws. He is averaging 16.3 points per game over the first 13 games. Gonzaga is currently 11 - 2 and riding a four game winning streak.

Moving on to Norfolk, Andre Dawkins has opened up 2009 with three solid scoring performances. On January 3, he dropped in 24 points as Atlantic Shores defeated Trinity Episcopal 93 - 43. In a 86 - 34 victory over Hampton Christian, on January 6, Dawkins scored 20 points. And on Friday night, January 9, he scored 21 points as Atlantic Shores knocked off Portsmouth Christian 86 - 51.

Out in Iowa, Harrison Barnes scored 18 points including 12 in the first quarter as Ames defeated West Des Moines Valley 89 - 31 on Tuesday evening. Barnes was 5 - 7 from the charity stripe and knocked down one three pointer in the game. Ames High School won their first seven games by an average of 30 points, on Friday night the Little Cyclones continued their dominating ways by defeating Marshalltown 69 - 40 and improving to 8 - 0. Barnes scored 22 points in the victory. Marshalltown defeated Ames in the state playoffs last year.

On to Seattle and Josh Smith who scored 16 points as Kentwood defeated Auburn 64 - 43 on Tuesday night. On Friday night, Kentwood defeated Kentlake 62 - 47. Smith exploded for 36 points in the game. Josh Smith is the leading scorer in the South Puget Sound League 4A at 24.6 points per game.

In Raleigh, Ryan Kelly scored 23 points on Wednesday evening as Ravenscroft defeated Word of God 68 - 59. John Wall had 17 points in a losing effort while future N.C. State player C.J. Leslie chipped in 20. In an overtime game, on Friday night, Forsyth Country day defeated Ravenscroft 53 - 51. Ryan Kelly scored a season low 11 points and missed a three point attempt with one second left. Ravenscroft is back in action against Cardinal Gibbons on Saturday at 8 pm.

Staying in North Carolina, Mason Plumlee had another big game recording a double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds as Christ School defeated Cannon School 82 - 60. This road victory improves Christ School's record to 19 - 0.

This edition wraps up by checking in on Brandon Knight down in Florida. On Wednesday evening he scored 36 points as Pine Crest School defeated Benjamin 88 - 69. Knight recorded eight assists and made five three point shots in the game. Knight and Pine Crest will be back in action on Saturday evening at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Classic.

Christmas leads Duke Women to a 73-58 win in their ACC opener

[private]The Duke Blue Devil Women scratched out a 73-58 victory over Miami on Saturday before a season high 7310 fans in Cameron Indoor Stadium.  It took a second half surge and a career high 21 points from Karima Christmas for the Devils to win their ACC opener and go to 13-1 on the season.

Duke jumped out to a 28-15 lead, but then went cold and Miami took advantage making a 13-0 run to tie the contest 28 a piece at the 2:32 mark of the first half.  Former Duke player and Miami coach

Katie Meyer had her women fired up and while Duke regained the lead, a Latoya James jumper sent the teams in to the locker room where the heavily favored Blue Devils held a slim two point lead.

In the second half, Duke resorted to their trademark which is defense holding the Canes  to 31.4% from from the floor.  Of course dominating the boards to the tune of 48-27 helped their cause as well.

Pressure defense was vital to the Devils run and several steals allowed for big plays and brought the crowd alive.  Miami hung in most of the game with their pressure as well, scoring 26 points off turnovers.  The youthful Canes were led by Epihany Woodson with 16 points, but their leading scorer Shenise Johnson was held to just 3 points.

Chante Black was once again steady tallying 17 points and 12 rebounds.  Joy Cheek chipped in with 12 points and Jasmine Thomas with 9 points.

But it was indeed Karina Christmas's night where she seemed very much in the flow of the game going 7 of 10 from the field to go with 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 steals.  Christmas also had a career high in three point buckets with three and her six steals were also a personal best.

“I think I’m just eager to get into the game, to try and make something happen, try and feed off my teammates, and make them feed off of me. I’m just motivated when I get in the game," said Christmas after her performance.

Miami Coach Katie Meyer stated, "Karima Christmas blew our scout – we don’t have her scouted for some of the stuff she did tonight, and that makes Duke a very tough team if she’s going to shoot the ball like that.  That was not a good Christmas present."

Christmas had a career night against Miami

Abby Waner was saddled with foul trouble and played only 18 minutes.  She eventually fouled out going scoreless, but managed 4 rebounds and 5 assists and 3 steals when in the game.  In fact, she is now second in the all time Duke record book for steals with 272, where she passed Iciss Tillis.  Her first half defense also slowed down Miami's Woodson before she had to go to the bench.

Duke also continued to show off their depth in that the Devils bench outscored the Canes 41-12.  It was the fifth time in the last six games that the bench scored 40 plus points which is quite an accomplishment.

The 13-1 start is also Joanne P. McCallies best start in her 17 years as a coach.

The Blue Devils take an 11 game winning streak into Monday evenings contest with Maryland.  When asked if she was already think about Maryland, McCallie responded,

“We start thinking about them now. All the games matter, there are 14 conference games and every one of them is of equal value. I know that there are rivalries but as coaches we do the same thing for every one."

Maryland (1-0 ACC, 13-2) has become quite the rival after several key match ups in the past few years.  Just over 7000 tickets have been sold for the game, but there are some good seats still available according to Duke SID Lindy Brown.  The game will be televised ESPN 2 with the ball being tip off at 7:30 EST.[/private]

The Blue Devils have won 274 games this decade, the most wins in a decade by the program. The win total is the fifth-most in any decade by a team in NCAA history.

Duke is coming off a 79-67 win over Davidson on Wednesday. Kyle Singler and Jon Scheyer each had 22 points to pace the Blue Devils.

Junior Jon Scheyer scored his 1,000th career point on a free throw with 33 seconds left to play in the win over Davidson. He is the 57th player in school history with at least 1,000 career points. Duke has the third-most 1,000-point scorers in NCAA history.

Four Freshman Duke Gridders Enroll Early

[private]The average senior in high school usually finishes out the year by going to the beach and such with their classmates once they graduate.  A few others have a unique focus and take education very seriously and they have enough credits to graduate early.   You don't see this as often with kids who have signed to play major college football, but Duke welcomes four new faces to campus for the spring semester.

Four members of Coach David Cutcliffes 2009 recruiting class - Kevin Rojas, Ryan Hall, Sydney Sarmiento and Zach Greene are already on campus and adjusting to the environment early on.

Ryan Hall is a 6-3, 230 pound tight end who played his high school football at Olympic in Orlando, Florida.  Hall is considered one of the top players at his position, one which was depth shy last season for the Blue Devils.

Hall is already rooming with another young man in Kevin Rojas, a 6-2 outside linebacker who played his high school ball just down the road from Durham at Wakefield.  Rojas is just one of many in state prospects Duke has had success with under the new staff and he will began the next level of his education just days ago.

Another outstanding in state prospect from neighboring Raleigh will join the group.  That being Zach Greene a kid with the kind of speed that  Duke is currently recruiting.  The 5-10, 170 pound secondary prospect carried a 3.8 GPA which allowed him to enroll and participate in the upcoming spring practices.

The fourth early entry is definitely the largest.  Sydney Sarmiento is a 6-4, 250 pound prospect from West Florence, South Carolina.  Like Greene, he come with a 3.8 GPA in hand and will now start to adjust to being a college student.

All four of the prospects will be working as a group with Duke Strength and Conditioning Coach Noel Durfey.  The incoming 2009 prospects will be Cutcliffe and companies first true recruiting class.[/private]

Kelly leads Ravenscroft past Word of God

[private]Ravenscroft defeated Word of God on Wednesday evening 68-57 to push their record to 13-3.  Duke bound Ryan Kelly went 8 of 15 from the field to score 23 points while grabbing 7 rebounds.

Word of God slipped to 7-7, but one must consider that both of these teams play in national

tournaments.  Hot prospect John Wall scored 17 points and N.C. State commitment C.J. Leslie garnered 20 points in the losing effort.

The game was tied at the half before Ravenscroft took the lead in the third quarter and held off a rally only to stretch the lead back out at the end of the game.

The game tipped off at the exact same time as the Davidson at Duke contest which prevented many Duke fans from attending.
